    Re: Painting Bee Hives?

All my hives are less than a foot apart and the same color. When the wind picks up and a quick summer storm rolls in, the foragers come streaming back to their hives. It doesn't look like they are...

Who's the head bee inspector? How many are inspected? How many hives are moved south?

Re: Best top bar hive plan

I wanted to try one too and ended up building this one. I'm sure any of the other plans posted are equally as good. Waiting for spring is harder than building one. ...

    Re: Rural Neighbors complaining

I'm sorry DPBsbees, I think there is two different conversations going on. I didn't suggest sub for building up, just that bees may go for corn instead of sub sometimes and putting it out may not...

    Re: Rural Neighbors complaining

Yes, and I don't feed subs anymore. I have nothing against them, but in a small apiary that is rich with natural pollen there is no difference between hives that are fed subs and hives that are not.

    Re: Rural Neighbors complaining

I don't think I would count on the dry sub. I once put out organic corn meal and pollen sub in separate feeders. Guess which one they couldn't get enough of?

    Re: Mating Nuc Colours

None, all my mating nucs are green. This was another good year, 3 out of 20 queens didn't return.

    Re: Bumblebee vs. Honey Bee

Nothing works tomatoes and peppers better than bumblebees in my area, I would never kill them. I see no benefit to honeybees by killing a few bumblebees.

    Re: 4 0ver 4 frame double nucs

Or you could just build 5 over 5, they overwinter great. It makes it easy to split them, sell them, or move them without having another hive attached. No need for special dividers.

    Re: Extracting: Sticky Predicament

Your deep freezer is the best solution, shb and wax moth won't hatch and your honey won't granulate.

    Re: interesting observation

Are you sure your not just moving drone brood to the center? Unless Im making up nucs, I always leave frames in the same order.

I've never put brood in mating nucs, so I would think you'll be fine.

    Re: Strip Mine Beekeeping

If you watch the related video, you should place your hives in NYC. The beekeeper claims the honey is much cleaner there.

  20. Re: Hive is consuming pollen like crazy...what do I do now?

I don't know. I placed a damp ball of newspaper next to a pollen patty and they both disappeared quickly, and I didn't see any paper or patty in stored in the frames.
  21. Re: Hive is consuming pollen like crazy...what do I do now?

[QUOTE=DaveInThePacNW;1173326]I have two hives...the healthier one is booming, feeding like crazy...they consumed half a pollen patty in two days.

There is also the possibility that when placing a...
  22. Re: Ragweed: Is it or is it not a good resource for bees?

Re: Harvesting Honey from Abandoned Hives

It won't work. Find a local beekeeper and trade the hives for honey if your not interested in beekeeping as a hobby. You'll get honey, and not end up in the ER.
  24. Re: Long black pointy fly preying on a honeybee. What insect could that have been?

I had a garden spider next to my hives once that had a small collection of honeybees and grasshoppers. I didn't think of it as a vicious killer but an effective one. I think the same about robber...
