splitting poor hives into nucs gives you 2 chances for the price of 1 when the honey wasn't going to be there anyway.

    Re: 1st OAV attempt

funny how the products producer addressed the treatment method but not the original posters issue with his product....

Re: How many of you started with just one hive?

started with one.. wish i had got 2 but that was the only swarm i got. Hopefully this spring i'll either split this one or maybe split off a nuc from a friend.

Re: Hives made out of cherry?

you could make a pretty banging Top bar/long hive out of it too and use a really durable finish. no lifting, large panels to show off the color.

    Re: my hive inspection apprehensions

my foundationless didn't have brace comb across the top bars but they did make bulging honey crowns on the top where the frame next to it had space to "give". mostly in my upper box. the lower box...
  8. Re: Frame top bars popping off, seeking opinions from the group

My carni mix is good at gluing stuff too.. I pry the frames sideways first to loosen them (stick hive tool between the frame sides and twist), then pull them upward. It is worse when it is cold...

Re: How do I Move My Hives 170 Miles?

was in the 50s here today in RI.. probably similar in MA. colder up north.. they had teens last night. hitting 100* will not happen.

id definitely set up some straps to keep the hives together...

  12. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

I looked today and the 4-5 frames i looked at in the bottom were getting filled so i feel a lot better now than i did before. still mostly uncapped but at least most cells were filled. still...
  13. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

I figure it is a large nuc size instead of a great full hive. It started as a fairly late may 25th swarm which probably missed most of the spring flow. I should have fed them more to get started...
  14. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

just made one of these that will hold about 1gal and will fit under a medium empty box over an inner cover

  15. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

psfred, the chicken feeder is inside an empty box over the top of the 2 populated mediums. so that part is the same. I will see what i can do about more syrup.

I checked them this morning and...
  16. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

I'll give that a shot since it will be on the cooler side tomorrow. we'll see what happens with that.
  17. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

did anyone watch the video the other day? This is what it looks like shortly after i put syrup into the 3rd empty box.. I don't know if it is foragers getting called home or if they are being...
  18. Re: Feeding wild bees - wow, they sure drink alot!

I'd compare this to feeding livestock or horses on someone's farm that you don't know. They are on a specific diet for the time of year. If the beekeeper is working to harvest their honey then...
  19. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

Yea, the top is in pretty good shape i think, so they should be moving on to putting things in the bottom box. we shall see how it goes. They are from an overwintered hive that swarmed so...
  20. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

well I took a look in the bottom box again today and they were at least putting some stores down there. So I put another liter of 2:1 under a 3rd empty box, screened up the top entrance. then for...
  21. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

If they don't fill enough, The other idea would be to reduce them down to 1 medium like a nuc to have more bees per comb? might be overthinking though

I don't have the wood to make thicker...
  22. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

luckily the top box is in pretty good shape. Any idea approx. how much 2:1 syrup would fill 1 drawn medium frame?

they don't use the top much.. i could screen over it for a while?
  23. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

That is the hope Mike, I am going to keep giving them syrup in a feeder inside an empty 3rd med. on top. then do some dry sugar mtn camp style when it gets cold. I was mostly worried about the...
  24. Re: Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

I thought about that too. I was worried about the robbing possibility so I didn't want to put the honey in a more vulnerable spot if that was the case. Hopefully I get a few good opinions and I...
  25. Honey/brood top med., not much in bottom med.

I am wondering if that is normal-ish for this time of year. 8 frame medium, 2 med's high. They had kind of a wimpy dry summer so they are trying to catch up with goldenrod.

    Bottom box, had...
