  1. Re: Comb between metal queen excluder and top of deep

That's nothing unusual. I suggest that you remove the excluder an put it in storage for good. Any capped brood that may evolve in the super will emerge in 10 to 12 days and those cells will then be...

    Re: smoker question

A small tuna can or cat food can will work fine. These days I use a custom wooden plug with a string connected. You could also use a wooden dowel with a nail through it.

    Re: bees not moving up

Generally you won't have any need for an excluder; that's really for very experienced beekeepers. This year I experimented with an excluder in one hive; after a day I couldn't stand he agony of...
  5. Re: Moldy Bee's in Drawn Out Foundation. Will new bee's clean them out

You need ventilation. I've been putting 6 small round headed screws on the bottom corners and edges of the inner cover. That gives a small opening around the top of the hive to vent, too narrow...

Re: Clean off of burr comb?

Just get used to burr comb, it will always be there. Keep your frames close and scrape the top bars, that's all that you need do. As mentioned above, keep a can handy to save the burr wax. ...

    Re: honey bound

You haven't told us your hive configuration, ie: two deeps, one deep, supers? You may just need to add another box. It seems a bit early to be honey bound. The uncapped honey/nectar is you future...

    Re: Stupid Mistakes

I destroyed four fully drawn frames by storing them in a plastic bin that had a black top; it was in the sun until I found that the drawn comb had all softened and fallen off. The bin is now located...

    Re: Queen flew away

I'd bet 99% that the queen is in the hive but you just didn't see her. The hive would be hostile with no queen. If they seem calm wait three to four weeks and look for brood or queen cells.
  12. Re: The billion little things that make a beekeeper's life easier

My hives are on top of cinder blocks and a pairs of parallel 2x4's; with a mirror and flashlight I can easily look up at the bottom of the lower deep without disturbing the hive. This way I can see...

Re: When to quit feeding the girls

I suggest that you back off the sugar feeding over a week's period. Blooms should be plentiful and you don't want the hives to be full of sugar syrup instead of nectar/honey. At the end of fall...

    Re: new nuc installed

The bees may not be taking your feed because there's a good chance that there's honey within the nuc frames. It sounds like you are off to a good start- no need to worry. Be careful with the...

    Re: Bt works!

As for spraying on bees, BT doesn't bother them. Two years ago I sprayed two active hives with BT, bees and all, without problems. As I take the extracted frames from the hives at the beginning of...

Re: Lost first hive to SMB

Ditto on the pollen patties; they are very much beetle magnets. If you can place them on top of piece of screen so that there is air flow underneath, it seems fine. Other than that, lots of oil...
  17. Re: ever seen burr comb like a new frame between frames?

I'm seeing that kind of burr comb much more in re-used foundation from past years. Most of it was left in place this year since I didn't want to disturb the brood period. During the next inspection...
  18. Re: Spotted - strange wild honey for sale in China (scam?)

  21. Re: New Package Install Help! It's all going pear shaped!

Re: Do you put weight on your top covers?

One brick on each hive and only on extremely windy conditions. Hives are protected by a high stockade fence.
  23. Re: Heeeelp!!! new give swarmed. wife caught them. now what?

Just leave them alone. Don't look into the hive for the next ten days. Calm down. Get a grip on yourself. It will all turn out OK.
  24. Re: Observations of the first 24 hours of a new beekeeper

A suggestion on the smoker is to plug the top hole with a wooden plug when you're finished with it; this way you won't need to refill with fuel as often. Not knowing what fuel you use, I can...

Re: New hive on day 11--going to plan b
