  1. Re: Goldenrod blooming in Central to West Michigan

I could smell it last weekend and finally got supers on at my other yard location this week.
Hoping this falls harvest won't be like last year.
  2. Re: I see pollen, does that mean nectar is flowing too?

I wonder if the cappings would be a different color. I know that it is when the bees bring in clover in early summer vs. when they bring in Goldenrod in the fall. I would think that the sugar water...

    Re: Nectar flows in Michigan

Pint and quart canning jars. Sell it at work, church, at the end of your driveway, Craigslist. Once the word gets out that you have honey, lots of people will want to buy it.
  4. Re: When should I take my supers off to prepare for winter?

I take my honey supers off at the beginning of October after Goldenrod is done. But I'm north of you and I also don't treat my bees for mites.
  5. Re: Can I vacume foragers toninght and dump directly into what I cut out this afterno

Dump them in front of the hive. They'll walk right in.

The first honey extraction is the best for a new keeper. Congrates!

Re: Low entrance activity - should I feed?

If there is plenty of honey and pollen in the hive, there is no need to feed.

    Re: should I add super?

Is it new foundation or drawn comb? If it was drawn comb I'd give them another box to put more nectar in.

Mike, where you are at, you should be able to sell it for $5 a pound easy!

    Re: used frames

Where the frames new last year? If so it was probably mites that killed them and I'd reuse the frames.
  11. Re: Time of day restriction for doing a split?

I'd do it. I don't really think it matters what time of day as long as it wasn't cloudy outside. They may get cranky.

Re: Package bees bringing pollen in already

Sounds like they are packing it away for future brood. They can make comb pretty fast in the right conditions.

Re: Dead mouldy bees in the hive

That happens often in the winter. It's no big deal. As the hive grows stronger the bees will clean all that up for you.
  14. Re: Can I Place Frame Feeder In Empty Super Over Bottom Box?

I would keep them just confined to the one deep. 2 deep = too much space for a new package. You could put the sugar water in a mason jar with some holes poked into the lid and place that over the...

Re: Queenless package with Queen cells

The first queen out will go to the rest of the cells, rip them open and sting them to death.

Re: I see larvae and drone cells????

What position is this frame in? If it's either 2 or 3 from the outside of the box, then this is normal.
What are the other frames like?

    Re: Leaving Them Alone

Breeding mite resistance bees isn't my goal. My goal is to get the bees through the winter so I will never have to buy package bees again. This method has worked for me now for 5 yrs.

  20. Re: Adding hive body with foundation already drawn...

If there are a good number of bees on every frame, that would be a good time to add the second box.

    Re: Upper Entrance

I will put a a stick in-between the top and inner cover. It helps with ventilation and also provides an upper entrance when needed.

Re: Concerned about ventilation due to ants

A strong hive will keep the ants at bay. They will usually use propolis around the inner cover hole to keep them out.
  23. Re: overwintering with or without screen bottom boards ?

I run both solid and screened. I leave the screen open all winter long and don't really notice a difference between the two.

    Re: Leaving Them Alone

If you have eggs in the queenless hive the chances of developing a laying worker are few. I've only ever had a few laying worker hives and that was due to the bee yard being so far away.
