  1. A question on the progression of cells -> mating nucs -> customer.

I'm a little unclear on some of the later stages of queen rearing. I understand that various methods of tricking a hive into making new queen cells.

  2. Re: Best way to use drawn supers to entice bees to draw in undrawn supers.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I didn't anticipate that the answer would be bottom supering, but what everyone says makes sense, and that's what I'll do.

    Thank you.
  3. Best way to use drawn supers to entice bees to draw in undrawn supers.

I'm wondering how I can make best use of drawn comb to entice bees to draw supers of undrawn foundation.

I'm using an excluder, and understand that undrawn comb right above the exclude is the...
  4. Re: How much can be extracted in 1 day with a motorized 6 frame extractor?

Similar situation here. I can uncap a load faster than I can extract it. Getting a bigger extractor isn't an option, though.

The afrorementioned distractions aren't a factor for me, so I am...

  6. Re: Nectar flow: Does rainfall extend nectar flow?

    True, True.

But how much is too much?
  7. Nectar flow: Does rainfall extend nectar flow?

We've had an unexpectedly rainy season here. Seems like we've lost almost two weeks that the bees foraging time was reduced. Moreso, I've heard that rainfall can wash out nectar, meaning less...

    Re: That is not BEES!

It's got striping, but seems a bit on the large side. Don't recognize the strain.

2 hives packed with bees, but not flying?

I've got two hives that are packed with bees, but there is little foraging activity evident, particularly compared to other hives, which are booming.

There is a little traffic coming and going,...

Re: Banking queens - Kill attendants?

Just checked. 2 of the cages are covered with bees. Whether friend or foe is unclear, but queens are alive. Third cage has no bees on it.

Re: Banking queens - Kill attendants?

Small wooden block about 1"x 2". Hollowed out center section, covered with screen. 1 queen, 3 attendants. Small hole in end, plugged with candy and covered with cork.

Re: Banking queens - Kill attendants?

Done, but I'm not hopeful- I didn't feel it went well.

I opened each queen cage, and held the queen with my fingers to prevent escape, while shaking attendants out. Then restapled cage shut.

Re: Banking queens - Kill attendants?

I just received the queens - 3 of them, with attendants.

No easy way to release attendants without compromising candy plug.

Should I kill them with a pin?

If I leave them in, and their...

    Banking queens - Kill attendants?

I've been asked to bank a few purchased queens for a friend.

I have a banking frame, a hive I can use (queenright), and an excluder.

I plan to put the queens in the banking frame above the...
  16. Contemplating cutout, but some bees acting strange.

I've been asked to do a cutout of an infestation of bees in the exterior wall of an old run down house.

The renter has specifically asked that I work to save the colony.

    The funny thing is...

    Re: Cutout from condemned house?

Much appreciated - Mice and pesticides are foremost on my mind. I'll be double watchful for mice-signs. I know they are a problem in the house.

The pesticide issue seems difficult to know...

    Re: Cutout from condemned house?

Not sure what you mean on "my life". For the house-surgery part, I have the tenant's assistance, who is a roofer. Structure is unsound, but that's a manageable challenge.

    Re: Foundationless woes

Lesson learned is that improper or uninformed use of a tool can bring unexpected results.

I suggest that both the bees and the frames are working as intended.

Re: My bees ignoring the supers.

    I've been considering the same.

What I've done is spray a mixture of feed and HBH on the top bars of the super, in an effort to draw them up.

Bees are up in the super now, but it's unclear if...
