:D This is my first so I don't know yet how successful it will be. Do you have any bees yet or are you waiting on the luck of the swarm?

Are you going to stick to the same size or make a longer one next time? 24 doesn't seem like much room for honey when already 15 are all brood. Mine is just under four feet long and they have just...
Hope they are okay and the queen didn't get injured.
I was a bit worried about that here last night but my hive and nuc came through alright...this time. Guess I need to look into anchoring them...
Nice looking trap PatBeek. I like the size. I made two, one 8 bar and the other 10 but no takers yet. I gave up on the 8 bar and put a split in it. Seems a bit small now that it has 5 bars of...
I was torn. Cleopatra has drama and was the name of such a well known queen...but who can't like a queen named Betty?
My first queen was named Luna. She was an Italian with a half flaked off...
This year's package queen I didn't spot until yesterday and I hived them on the 6th of April. I saw eggs on every inspection so I wasn't too worried but needed to find her for a split. I split...
I did it last year. Found an old "chop n crop" thread on here that helped plus watched the Phil Chandler video. The wire snips were invaluable, I had to stop and go get them. I was prepared with a...
I've made my second hive out of cedar so I sure hope the bees like it (not in use yet). It just seems like the bees this person captured don't like something about the hive he has. A quick nuc made...
I made two from a three foot long temporary hive I had built last year. The depth is a bit less than my normal hives because I used what I had on hand which were 1 X 10s instead of 1 X 12s. One is...
It sounds like your weather is similar to ours in a normal year but this spring has been cold and rainy. Last year my queen shut down laying due to the heat and drought. We had a record heatwave...
It sure seems like there is just something they don't like about your hive. I really don't know the answer but can you try a different hive? One that is not cedar? Do you have a nuc or something...
Mine are all brood right now too, except the last one which has all nectar in it (nothing capped). I think we have a flow starting so I took out the feeder jar and am hoping they will start making...
Sounds like they are doing really well! Last year the bees I had didn't really make any drone comb but this year the new bees have made a bunch. I am taking it as a sign of health and strength.

Bummer about the wasps. I've read that bees can be testy if they are being bothered by a predator. I don't know the particulars offhand but I have seen wasp traps mentioned on the site a few times....
You can also add them when/if the bees aren't building the comb on the center or peak of the bar to get them back on track on the next bar.
You will find a LOT of debate on that on here, just do a search for screened versus solid or look back a little because there was a Thread on it earlier this spring.
I think some of it comes down...
I just started beekeeping last year so I can't really advise you but I can share what I have observed so far.
My first hive had an entrance at the bottom a few inches from the end, and when I...
Looks like they are drawing some nice straight comb!
Sorry DrDoorlock, I didn't mean to make this about paint! The hive really is beautiful and I agree the patina is charming, I was just thinking if it were mine I would manage to get some into it...
When is the weather going to give you an opening? What is your plan?
Nice looking hive. I really hope that isn't lead paint on those boards. I think they banned lead house paint in the 70s.
Not sure if you are referring to mine, there was someone else who showed one that looked more like what you are describing. I made two different types, original pictures are in this Thread. My...
Lots of capped drone brood in my hive and yesterday I spotted a queen cup. I got in the hive this morning to do some prevention but sure looks like the season is starting here.
I was in my hive Sunday and didn't see any queen cells or cups, but they had doubled the size of the brood nest in just over a week at the expense of most of their stores. I peeked in the...
Congrats!
