    Re: Bee behavior

Google "Festooning" there are a lot of theories about why they do that.

Re: Swarming, or just heavy traffic?

Sounds like orientation flights. They happen around the same time every day.

    Re: 1st inspection question

Did the queen come in the box with the other bees? If so then they've had a while for them to accept her. If she came separately and you just introduced her on Wednesday then I'd wait another day...
  4. Re: Attracted to light and Untimate demise - Zombie Bees

Last summer I would have bees attracted to the kitchen light in the mornings. As soon as I got up and turned it on they would be climbing on the kitchen window. This was around 5am so it wasn't...

Re: Funniest bee question ever asked

This thread reminds me of the time that diary farmers started dumping their milk out rather than selling it because they weren't getting enough for it to make a living. This news reporter asked a...

    Re: Two New Queen Questions

I did that. They said it would be at least a week before they had any queens ready.

    Two New Queen Questions

I installed a package last weekend. Went in today to check on the queen and she was still in the cage but not moving. Opened the cage and set her out on top of the frames and she still didn't move....

Re: My smoker smoke may be too hot

This is off the topic of your question but I was wondering if you were planning to use a smoker when you were installing the bees? I've been told that's not a good idea.

Re: Funniest bee question ever asked

I get the hibernation quesion a lot. Never had the flying north comment. Now I know what to say when it comes up. One of the most difficult to explain is "How do they make a new queen?"

Re: Heard Queen Piping for first time

So what does the old queen do while all this piping is going on?
  11. Re: Ok to install packages anytime during day ?

This is one of those questions that if you asked three beekeepers you'd get four different answers. I was told to do it late afternoon. However, if your queen is still in her box I don't see why...

    Wintering a Top Bar Hive

I'm wondering if TBH's winter as well as Langstroth hives? Particularly those with viewing windows. Even with the wooden covers over the glass in the windows it seems the glass would radiate the...

    What is this bee doing?

It looks like one bee is grooming another one. They were doing this when I got to the hive so I don't know how long it went on but I watched for several minutes. Also it's an empty hive right now...

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

I bought some of the Swarm Commander several weeks ago and didn't have any problems ordering. Just put out some traps this weekend so we'll see if anything happens. Along this line, is it...

    Re: swarm trap lures

Sounds like you've got the bases covered. I'm not familiar with slum gum but don't use too much of the scented stuff. I've just put out traps with lemon grass, old drawn comb, and Swarm Commander...
  20. When to put out swarm traps in central North Carolina?

I want to try my hand at trapping some swarms this year. It's been a very cold February but looks like the winter weather may finally break after this week. Any recommendations on when would be a...

Re: How do you feed honey back to the bees?

Thanks for all your responses. Good advice.
  22. Re: To feed or not to feed...that is the question

Now for a third opinion. Feed them the honey. It will be a lot better for them than sugar syrup. Since you got it locally there's probably nothing in it that your bees won't be exposed to any way.
  23. Re: Another North Carolinian, brand new just starting type

Welcome! You'll enjoy the experience. The hardest part will be installing that first package of bees. Try to watch someone else do it before you get yours or either have someone with you who's...

Re: Help buying a Top Bar Hive

"I’m in search of buying a Top Hive" Since you ordered two packages of bees, I'm assuming that you're ordering two hives as well?

I started with Top Bar Hives having never kept bees before and...

Re: How do you feed honey back to the bees?

Good points but I should have been more specific. I've already crushed and strained a couple of quarts. I was wondering how to feed that back to the bees. I can do what you suggested with the...
