Poll: Re: City bees vs. Country bees

Our bees are on the edge of the city and can forage both countryside (farmland, ditches, etc.) and city. In the city we have streets with many Linden (Basswood) trees, maples, etc. as well as crab...
  4. Re: There has to be a better way (moving hives)

Did you try misting the bees or sprinkling them with water so they think it is raining and move into the hive?

Maybe you need to network with another beekeeper in your area or hire some teenagers...

    Re: Foundation vs Foundationless

If you are going to run more than one hive, you could try one as foundationless and double your learning experiences. Some newbees can handle that and some maybe not. Up to you what you decide.

We do mediums with foundationless with the wedge top frames. We used to nail the wedge in turned side up but no longer do that. Read on Beesource that the bees have enough edge on the top bar...

How do you secure chunk honey in the jar so you can fill it with liquid honey and keep the chunk from floating? :)

How much would you charge for a pint of honey with good size chunk (2x4?) in it?...

Re: Price of Pint Jar of Honey

v45, Yes, I figured that must have been what you meant after I posted. Do you fill past the first thread for either quarts or pints? I'm trying to keep honey off the cap.

Re: Price of Pint Jar of Honey

    v45

    Better check your math.

    1.4# x 16 oz. = 22.4 oz. (ok to round down)
    2.4# x 16 oz. = 38.4 oz.

I had a little digital scale also and found that going up to the first thread in the pint...

Re: Price of Pint Jar of Honey

I have questions for those that sell pints (canning jars).

What do you put on the label for ounces of weight?
Do you also have to list in pound and ounces (a pint of honey would weigh more...

    Re: Apitherapy on ankle

I have used the reverse tweezers with the tapered end. You must grab the bee by the head or thorax. If you mess with the abdomen much it will ruin the ability to sting. I have a regular reverse...

  19. Re: Phrases I just wouldn't have expected to say till I started beekeeping

    My honey's a keeper!

We have to work the bees before we go on vacation.

Let's keep bees. Don't tell the neighbors.

The buzzards (bees) are busy today.

I'm not afraid of getting stung.
