Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

I don't think any that purchased a perk have received it yet.

Re: Combing a swarm...is it feasible?

I could make a cardboard follower with a paper section.

I have some concern that they may have turned laying worker in the past week. I saw some drone brood that I can only blame on that! I...

Re: Advice on moving a hive by hand

I closed the entrances with screen. Strapped the hive together so it looked a Cristmas box. Then covered it with a sheet and coerced others younger than myself to do the lifting. We strapped it in...

    Re: Introducing grafted Queens

    Quite confused:)

Hive has no eggs or brood...open or closed. It is one from a group of early splits I made...perhaps too early for successful Queen rearing. Two others are drone factories this, as...

    Re: Treated first time today

Who would have thought that a thought provoking post on how bees being bees may curb mite infections would bring out such attitude and nastiness:(

    Combing a swarm...is it feasible?

I have a couple of TBH ...neither are boomers and one is currently Queenless. If I get another swarm can I divide the tbh, try and hive it in one end and then remove the divider? Not certain how to...
  7. Re: From Overwintered Nuc into Production hive early.

When I have done that I start with all 10 frames in a single deep. Once they have settled I pull a couple of frames up to the next deep and fill the empty spaces with undraw foundation.
    Hives that...
  8. Re: How many colonies can I put in a small space?

I have a long row of hives with only 6" between them. I have to work them from behind but I am used to that now.

    Re: Introducing grafted Queens

Thanks...what about the Queenless hive with no brood? How to best introduce a new Queen to them? With or without her frame of eggs and bees?

    Introducing grafted Queens

I now have a few grafted Queens...not enough to wSte and sure enough in the process to be thinking if I fail I will simply raise a few more.

The Queens are in 2 frame mating Nucs...a deep with 4...

Re: Confessions of a first time grafter

I just started as well. At first I pinched one side of the cell off with my finger nail but find I don't need to with the Chinese graft tool.
I have found that if I place the frame to be grafted...

    Re: Aficanized bees are fake

I fully agree that AmxAm=AM but having said that beyond the race of bee there is the topic of gene expression. If one group of bees has developed with an strong gene expression for aggression then...

    Re: hive questions please help

It sounds they may have made Queen cells along the bottom. Are all the bigger cells closed or does one/ some have open tips? If so your hive may have swarmed and taken the original Queen with them.

  15. Re: Can a hive have both a queen and laying worker?

I was lead to believe that most hives have some laying workers and that normally those eggs are destroyed by the bees...now I am confused.
  16. Re: Mixing, adding and moving bees...what are the guidelines

If moving a recently mated Queen from a mating nuc to a newly made up nuc if moved on a frame from the mating nuc does she need to be caged when moved or will having a frame of her own bees around...
  17. Mixing, adding and moving bees...what are the guidelines

I read about doing newspaper combines, making up Nucs and mating Nucs and strengthening hives.

I think I read a thread that said if you mix bees from 2 hives they will go to war and kill one...

Re: Going to give grafting a go tomorrow...

My first graft a few weeks ago. I was amazed how many cells were built despite the builder being weaker than when I made it up.

This time I did things a bit differently.

I shut the bees in a...
  22. Re: How to identify which hive swarmed? Lower honey? Other?

So...how does one detect what hive warmed? If no QC on the bottom of frames and no eggless hives.
Is it possible / likely the swarms have come from from hives other than your own?

    Re: Can swarms combine?

    How cool is that!

Re: When is the best time to use a Queen Castle

I am using that type of box for the first time this year.
I grafted some cells and put the cells on Queenless frames with some brood and nectar.

On the ones that didn't end up with a mated Queen...
