When my hive was new last year, they could rasily go through a quart a day while drawing comb. They are established now and don't feed at all since I'm in Florida and there's plenty of nectar most of...
Alrighty! Some of that makes sense :D So, in all likelyhood, hive "a" with the larvae still has the original queen. The split hive "b" with the queen cells probably had 2 queens emerge and that...
Hey all! Interesting development at my yard. I did a walkaway split on March 12th and everything is going well. One hive has a queen and larvae, the old hive has 8 queen cells which should start...
I live in Orlando... and I swear all my girls are accounted for!! :D
I'm with Riverhawk....I've used queen excluders, but only have a single deep with 1 super. The girls cap honey in the super with no problem. Might be different with other configurations, though. Good...
Heya! Yup...I have found these in my hive in the last month or so. They definitely look like wax moth larvae. They burrow through the pollen cells and destroy pretty big sections of comb. My guess is...
Does freezing the comb kill the virus? Obviously it'll kill the brood and varroa, but would the frame and comb be reusable after freezing?
Thank you both for posting and replying. I have exactly the conditions you have both stated. Ugh!
I've been focusing on SHB and had them under control, so I didn't think about mites. I looked but...
I'm guessing you meant SHB or small hive beetle. A number of things to do..
1. Are you using a screened bottom board? If not, get one with a beetle trap.
2. There are a number of beetle traps on...
I did that and it worked fine. I used a cookie sheet with a little vegetable oil in it - just enough to cover the bottom. Caught a bunch of beetles and larvae that fell out of the hive.
I haven't...
I'm young!! I'm only 50!! :lookout:
Yup.... you're absolutely right. I get more useful info here, than from books and even other beeks.
The PayPal option makes it convenient, also!!
Just curious.. are there different strengths of venom between breeds - say russian, italian or others?
I googled it and got the apitherapy pages, but no breakdown on types of bees and potency....
So far... my middle finger of my left hand. One of the girls tagged me the other day, right in the fleshy pad part near the tip and my finger swelled like a sausage!! Ha!! Didn't hurt badly, just...
This is the kind of stuff that makes beekeeping so dang fascinating!! Thousands of years, and we still don't know why they do what they do!
Here's a study that was done :
...
Alrighty! I was kinda thinking that over-wintering might be a good reason. And yeah... it's a lot different in Maine than central Florida to say the least :)
Hi all!! Just curious about why two deeps became the standard for a "normal" Langstroth hive.
Is it space for the queen to lay? Supplies for overwintering? I understand that folks have all different...
Funny you should ask...
I was mowing the lawn and got tagged by a paper wasp two days ago! After the initial "Yeeeeow" - nothing!
Got stung by a honey bee yesterday at a friend's hive and my thumb...
Yeah... no telling what will happen. Took a hit on the temple - and nothing! Did have a little lump that traveled down past my ear and dissipated.
Then took one on the elbow and hand within a couple...
Nope!! I cracked one to be sure, but left the others intact. So I'll check on 'em in a week or so and see what happened!
And I have a friend who's hive is having issues and some of queen cells may...
Dang... I wish I had taken a picture yesterday of mine. I have 5 on one frame. They look like acorns - about as big - on the top half of the frame. I dunno, probably protruded 3/8 " off the frame.
I...
And that also goes back to the big question:
Will bees reject syrup and go for nectar if it is available? I have heard numerous times "if they don't need syrup, they won't take it" from...
Sooo... the bees will cap sugar syrup?? I thought once it was capped that it was "honey" or maybe now "syrup honey" after they add an enzyme, whether the source was nectar or syrup....
Do they cap...
Okie-dokie!! That clears a lot up for me :)
As a backyard hobbyist, with a "garden hive" and no intention of selling honey - it really doesn't matter whether I feed the girls. If they can build...
Exactly John!!
I have a new hive also and have been feeding 1:1 since I got it in May. Wonderful success! Comb is fully drawn in single deep and super and I swap out frames every once in a while...
