But aren't herbs supposed to enhance the general health of your bees anyway? I'm sure I read a report on it somewhere, I'll have to see if I can find it now.

Lauri,
That's a great looking setup you have there, I really like all you herb pots and plantings.
No, you're right, you didn't SAY they were the stolen hives, but in a thread devoted to some hives that were stolen you posted a link to a sale of some hives that happen to be painted a similar...
Of course they can, I just think it's a bit rich to start surmising because this guy happens to have a few blue hives that now he's suspicious. C'mon, no-one else can paint their boxes blue?
He's making 2:1 mix. 25lbs sugar to 12.5lbs water.
There's no distinction between honey comb and brood comb. If you use foundation they are all the same. The distinction is between worker comb and drone comb, the cells of the drone comb being larger...
Offtopic I'm afraid but, Lauri, why have you torched your woodenware like that? I assume you've run a blowtorch over them. Do you just like the appearance or does it serve another purpose? Camoflage...
Sorry Oldtimer, I missed your location in the header. Is your weather truly early summer? Yesterday in Melbourne it sleeted up in the nearby hills at Mt. Dandenong. I spent a few weeks working in and...
What part of the world are you in Oldtimer?
You don't need a really fine measuring tool, just measure 10 or 20 cells and then divide to get an individual cell size, you'll be closer to the real number.
I understand that the Kangaroo Is. bees have been genetically identified as having come from France.
G'day Jeff,
Say, how do you test the frames before you pull them? Do you test them in-situ? I'm considering getting a refractometer and am trying to learn best ways of using them.
What problems does corn starch bring?
Thanks for the link BeeTeach I haven't seen anything like that in Aus.
Thanks for the info hunter. I would have just shaken them in but it was only asmall swarm and they had already started laying brood, I just wanted to help them out as much as possible. I've got a...
Forgive my ignorance but what is a honey stick?
Upside down, interesting. How does that affect the developement of the brood?
I've got the swarm in a 5 frame nuc, there is good activity coming and going so I'm very pleased,
Thanks americasbeekeeper, I'd just about come to that conclusion myself.
Hi everyone,
Got a call to rescue a small swarm today but the swarm has been clustered in the tree long enough to build 5 combs about the size of a bread and butter plate each. I've cut the branch...
We're fortunate that we don't have varroa in Australia (yet) but I have been reading with interest about the effects, why don't you have to treat your nucs for varroa?
Michael, thanks that's the best explaination of hive strength I've heard. The more I read I'm slowly coming to understand but I'm certainly enjoying the discussion.
Better able to manage heating, defence, drawing comb etc... Now I'm starting to catch on :), please continue
I haven't had a chance to look at those videos yet but I will tonight when I have some more time.
Yes I can see the point about working without a net but if you have a hive and a nuc, then you have 2 colonies, albeit one smaller than the other. Regardless whether the colonies are in a 5 frame nuc...
