I run solid bottoms with only the front entrance open in the summer in Indiana. no top ventilation. No holes in boxes. Bees seem fine this way.

    Re: Mini-swarm after supercedure. Theories?

We see "mating swarms" quite often. Bees leave with the virgin and for whatever reason cluster before returning to the hive. Chances are you hived your newly mated queen.

    Re: Heavy Honey Flow Resuming

It has been raining a ton and the bees are flying a ton.
The flow isn't what it was in early June, but the bees are still building good here.

  12. Re: will laying worker hive make queen cell if given worker eggs?

Try a 6 day old queen cell. 6 days from graft.
  13. Re: The billion little things that make a beekeeper's life easier

When you think you are finished with a hive, step back and look closely at it. Is everything in order.
Important to do every time. We often forget things.

Lauri, Are you leaning more towards breaking production colonies down post flow and feeding the smaller colonies to winter or maintaining and feeding the large colonies post flow.

  17. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

if the bees are starving i disagree that it is too cold for syrup. Make a fructose/sucrose blend and get a bucket on em.

    Re: Better Genetics

Why not make your chosen survivor a drone breeder and graft from another. If by chance your virgins mate with several drones from your breeder, then you have deepened the gene pool.

    Re: Beemax Nucs

Check out Modern Beekeeping. I like the ones I have from Betterbee but the ones Modern has are more versatile IMO. Little more expensive but very nice. And dividable! With bee space.
