  1. Re: I've got brood back! Comments welcome on ANYTHING you see!

What I saw in the photos was spotty drone brood. If it were me I would do a frame by frame inspection to look for the queen. Or wait until later next week to see how the
larva turn out once they are...

    Re: Candy vs sugar block

    I used Lauri's recipe for sugar blocks last year and they seemed to consume them quite well. Will be using them again this year. Here is the link;

    Re: injured queen

I had a similar experience with an injured queen I received with a package last year. She had a injured back leg and could not or would not back into the cell to lay.

She did not lay for a couple...
  5. Re: Found capped queen cells, need advice on how to proceed

If it were me I would make at least one if not two nucs from them. I would then combine them prior to cold weather.

A swarm this time of year has almost no chance of survival and will decimate the...

Re: SHB, tell me this isn't

Yes, SHB. You did the right thing in removing the pollen patty. They are definitely SHB magnets. I lost a hive in SE Ohio around June to these menaces. The County Apiarist reported
    small amounts of...

    Re: Bees stayed behind!

I agree, not a bee, but a wasp. Personally I don't care for wasps and wouldn't do anything. Let your conscious bee your guide.

    Re: Remove bees before painting?

I would transfer the hive into a new painted box and remove the ones you want to paint. Then return them to the hive if you want.

I personally wouldn't paint hives with a colony in it.

Re: New Hive/ bees not drawing comblike

Your hive may be getting ready to swarm. I would either divide or perform other swarm avoidance measures or you may loose half your bees. At this time of year it may
    be deadly to your hive.
    You...

    Re: Quilt box

I use 1X4 stock. Cut into size of hive box (16 1/4" by 19 7/8" as I recall). Drill 1" holes on all four sides and cover with *8 hardware cloth. Paint or stain. Staple unbleached muslin onto the...

    Re: Frames After Extracting

I just put them back on the hive I took them from and they will clean and straighten them up. Then I remove them before it starts getting cold. Worked last year.

    Re: Funny honey label

It would probably fill a niche market, but might hurt over all sales. People don't want to see the man behind the curtain.

It is a nice graphic and presentation though.

    Re: Lost hive to skunks

This is one of the main reason I was instructed early on to have your hives at least 18" off the ground, which I do. I have had signs that skunks have been around, but no loss as yet.
  17. Re: Nubees to Bee Keeping.........any help or advice appreciated.

Welcome and Good Luck with your hives. Find as many books as you can on beekeeping and read as many as you can.

See if you have a local or state bee club you can join to provide local information...

Re: Making change two years out

For some reason in my hives it does not matter. I have not had a marked queen survive a year before they superceded her.

But I would like a bright easy color to see while she lasted though :D

  23. Re: How would you harvest honey if you were me?

Ther are a couple of on line companies that sell 2 frame hand cranked plastic extractors for around $149.00.

If cost is not an issue get a stainless steel one.

I have seven hives and will have...

    Re: Insulation or Not-For Winter

I used two inches of rigid foam insulation on all my hives last year. This year I am going to make and use some quilt boxes to try and gauge any difference in their success.

    As stated above,...
