  1. Re: A split that seems to be laying worker, yet a queen cell was made.

I had a split that had a poorly mated queen. They tried to supercede her, but didn't get a new queen. Then it started with a laying worker. I added a frame of eggs/brood from my main hive every...

    Re: Smoke when taking honey?

I use Bee Quick and in a few minutes, they are out of the super. You spray it on a fume board. I only had to brush off a couple of bees. I did not smoke mine.

    Re: Selling Your Honey

I haven't sold any yet, but I have far more people wanting to buy honey from me than I do honey. The husband wants me to expand.

Re: Need some advice about queens

I've had a queenless colony still bringing in pollen. It makes sense that they would prepare for brood, even if there isn't currently a queen.

Do you see any queen cells? When capped, they...
  5. Re: First and Last year since no one can play nice

Ask them if they are an organic farm. I have apple trees and have never once sprayed mine. (or any of my other fruit trees)

    Re: Blood Curdling Scream

The bees don't bother the Terro. I have used it around my hive without any problem. No ants between the top cover and inner cover this year.

Re: Arrangement of hives in an apiary...

Where you face your hives depends on the direction your weather comes from. I see you are in Italy, so your weather patterns may be different. Most of the US tends to face theirs south, because the...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Yesterday, I removed the queen cage in my split that I have not been able to get to raise their own. I pushed all of the frames back together, and fed them.

    Re: Funny honey label

    Funny!

I've had some friends refuse to eat my eggs because they come from a chicken's butt. I tell them "where do you think the ones from the store come from?" It usually shuts them up pretty...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Checked on my split this morning with a caged queen that I just introduced in it. This colony was queenless for so long off and on (tried several times to get them to raise their own queen), that...

Re: It's harder than I thought...

I'm still pretty new as well. Realize you will make mistakes. I lost my first set of bees their first winter due to mites. I learned from it and started again the following spring. They have been...

Re: Whats a queenless hive sound like???

I have to agree here. I had a queen less split, and the sound they made was different than my hive with a good queen. It was more intense than the normal hive check sound.

Re: Time to give up and buy a queen?

Yes, they tore down the previous queen cells. It's been 30 days since she would have hatched. The roar of the bees when I got in there last evening to check also indicated no queen. I'm guessing...

Re: Time to give up and buy a queen?

Yesterday was 30 days and not an egg to be found, so I went and bought a mated queen and installed her last night. They surrounded the cage instantly, but it didn't look hostile. Fingers crossed...

  19. Northern CA Beekeepers - Super questions for you

I see all these posts of beekeepers in other areas of the US that have 3 or 4 supers per hive that their bees fill up quickly. Some even extracting multiple times during the summer.

    It got me...

  21. Re: Timing of ApiGuard treatment for winter bees

I treat in late August/early September here. You still need warm temps for the Apiguard. I time it right after I remove the honey super. I have not noticed any brood breaks, but I tend to stay out...

Re: Anyone know what this plant is?

It isn't a great picture, but we were driving and it was all I could get. We are not on the coast, but in the foothills. I know it's not a crape myrtle, I'm very familiar with those. The bloom...
