    Re: Record Keeping for Beeks

This is my first year actually keeping a hive. Dadant has a packet of sheets dedicated to the sole purpose of tracking various aspects of the hive's progress. I was rather upset that the $2.00 hive...
  2. Re: Sheesh, building comb where they "shouldn't"!

I was thinking about that, but they have drawn so much out so early (before the flow) I think it might piss them off more than just letting them rebuild, or add a super soonish. I just hope I didn't...

Not letting me upload files or even put them as attachments...lemme fiddle around for a minute...
  5. Sheesh, building comb where they "shouldn't"!

Opened up the hives to see the progress as the flow starts to trickle in the area. Hive 1 was doing exceptional, all the frames were at least started, with some capped. I was trying to bee quick, so...
  6. Re: Alternative Subspecies in North Carolina (other than Italian)

Thank you for your extremely thoughtful response. Your opinion merits much thought and consideration! I'm sorry, again, for such a delay in response, so much going on on the farm, and finals for...
  7. Re: Do you think I messed up, and maybe encouraged them to swarm?

Thanks everyone for helping me keep a cool head. its my first year (obviously) and I just get nervous about my new hobby. I have a tendency to hyperfocus on things, particularly new hobbies.

    I...
  8. Re: Do you think I messed up, and maybe encouraged them to swarm?

Thanks brooks, i think i might just leave them alone for a few days. I was looking at it to see if there was a queen, couldnt see one. They were tightly balled up, feeding and cleaning each other.

  9. Re: Do you think I messed up, and maybe encouraged them to swarm?

Thank you for the response guys.

They werent making swarm cells, im just wondering if i prompted them to do so, stressing them and all

I checked on them again, not going into the hive, but...

  11. Do you think I messed up, and maybe encouraged them to swarm?

Hi all! I installed two packages about 2 weeks ago. Theyve been doing pretty good, feeding honey hee healthy, and building lots of comb. They release the queen, all is normal.

    Today, i noticed...
  12. Re: Alternative Subspecies in North Carolina (other than Italian)

Thanks for the replies everyone, sorry I've been so slow to respond, it's spring and that means I'm busy on the farm!

As for why, well, in all honesty, it boils down to my very amateur idea that...
  13. Re: Alternative Subspecies in North Carolina (other than Italian)

Thanks! Im worried about Russians swarming alot, or being agressive. I know buckfast can be agressive, but mainly if from the south. Do you have any experience with russians? My local "mentor" if you...
  14. Alternative Subspecies in North Carolina (other than Italian)

Hi all! I'm looking to find up to 4 packaged or nucs, or even just queens other than Italians in north carolina. I'd rather not have to ship these, and I'm willing to drive an hour or two (or more if...

I apoligize for the typos, im in between classes on my phone.
  16. Re: Planting suggestions for covering chain-link privacy fence?

I ordered some winter hardy kiwi vines last year, and they over wintered well. I cleared out about a half acre of tumberland on our property last week, and will transplant them there as soon as it is...
  17. Re: Planting suggestions for covering chain-link privacy fence?

I am so sorry for the delayed response. Busy as a bee (almost!) as spring creeps in. I knew they hybridized, but was unsure the result. I don't know if it will upset your fruits, or if the results of...
  18. Re: Planting suggestions for covering chain-link privacy fence?

I'm pretty sure they do hybridize quite freely. I also had an interest in growing incarnata for medicinal reasons, they do quite a bit from what I've read.

    Passiflora seed are readily available...
  19. Re: Planting suggestions for covering chain-link privacy fence?

Most (if not all) passafloras have incredibly low germination rates. I have germination mats (like heating pads), really nice professional grade lighting, and the equipment to create most any...

    Re: Buckwheat

I'll def check out ebay for the bulk. The ability to handle drought was really another thing I liked about buckwheat, however, I don't feel as if it were to be drought conditions, it would matter...

    Re: Buckwheat

That is exactly what the beeks around here tell me, that the ladies stop around lunch and move on to something else until the next morning. I wonder if there is some sort of beek-equation that would...

Yea, I'm really just looking to add a little something to what is normally found around here. I know that with this year's allotment, I'm not going to be able to call it by any varietal name....

I'll check that out! The guy at the feed store said 3-5 lbs an acre, this must not at all be the buckwheat we are after.
  24. Re: Follow up with the County Extension office

When I read the title of the thread, I immediately thought of passaflora (passionflower) species. There are a few variety, and 1 that I know of that will produce fruit the first year. It has some of...

    Re: Buckwheat

Thanks! I didn't think it would be quite enough to call it "pure" buckwheat, but I just thought it might add a unique characteristic, and darker color to my local variety. Would have just been nice...
