  1. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

Yes, honey bees aren't the only bugs that seem to have built in winter survival. Many of them have anti-freeze in their systems.
  2. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

They survive the cold because that's what bees do and have done for millions of years. Its hard for any of us to really understand how bees can sit out there in those wooden boxes in below zero...

Re: do ten frame boxes increase starvation?

If the OP's winter temperatures are in the 30's-40's there shouldn't be any starving at all in any size box as long as the cluster is strong and the box they are in has sufficient food in every...
  4. Re: Alternatives for securing the metal top to a telescoping cover

I use galvanized phillips drive pan head screws now, about 3/4" long, they won't ever come out on their own and you can easily replace the wood of the cover if you ever need to and reuse the metal...

    Re: Frame Perch

I like them and use one regularly when doing inspections, especially when you want to set the frame aside with the queen on it. I don't like setting the frame on the ground leaning against the hive...

Re: Checking on Bees in winter. How often?

As others have said, if the hives went into winter with plenty of honey/stored syrup, they shouldn't need any inspection until the weather breaks, which for me is early March. If it makes me feel...

Re: Here's how I do my oxalic acid vapor treatment

It seems as thought the other vaporizer manufacturers would be aware of this also, if this statement is even true. Maybe this is just a sales tactic to make their particular vaporizer look more...
  8. Re: Bee's STILL collecting pollen in the sun, November 17th, near Niagara Falls!

Its about 55 and sunny here right now and my bees are bringing in lots of bright orange pollen and a little less off white pollen. I have no idea where they are getting it in that quantity, as...

Re: What got learned from my last extraction

Yep, cutting through those old cocoons is tough! Going with one less frame in the box will help some. I run 8 frames in a 10 frame box to get nice wide combs, but you do have to deal with much more...

Re: enough honey to survive winter?

I used to run a few TBH's years ago, and my opinion is that they don't seem to use as much honey through the winter as a regular Lang hive does. That being said, if the other 10 bars have all the...

    Re: OAV and Honey

Exactly. Not only that, but if you do one last treatment around Thanksgiving (which many do) the weather isn't always perfect, at least in my area you can count on cold weather, maybe very cold....

    Re: OAV and Honey

I am in the same situation as the OP, I left a medium super of honey on all my hives this fall because the brood boxes were a little light on food storage after the fall flow. I need to do my final...

    Re: Decappers?? Thinking Ahead

Having not seen the video, I won't say it couldn't work, but it just seems to me that the wax would re-harden after you take the hair dryer away from the comb, and reseal the cells again to some...

    Re: Decappers?? Thinking Ahead

Just curious, those of you who run 40 frame or larger extractors, what would you say is the average run time you use? For me, using 20 frame Maxant's, I run close to 10 minutes a load.

I was actually talking about the manual uncapping roller that is sold by the supply companies. If you incorporated that same idea into an automatic uncapper, then you would still have the same...
