First pollen of the season Central Maine

A heat wave 60-70 F is moving things along quickly and saw bees bringing in pollen this morning. Maybe dogwood pollen, cream color, some a little darker too. Nice to have some bees make it through...

    Re: Foundation Pins

Bobby pins were recommended to me by the people who sold me the hive equipment and they have been working fine
on medium frames as well as deeps. Price is right too.
Not sure about how they would...

    Re: Winter Losses or Success?

Lost one of two colonies . Think we are out of the woods now so to speak.
My fault for losing the one, didn't keep up with their voracious appetite for sugar once their honey was gone. A strong...

    Re: Wild Turkeys

I've seen chickadees take honeybees but not turkeys.
Turkeys here walk behind the hives instead of in front.
    Maybe smarter than they look...

    Re: Installing wind breaks...question

I installed a 3 sided 4'+ tall solid windbreak this fall for 2 hives about 4' apart. The space behind is a couple feet, enough to get back there to check on things.
We had snow about 4' or more deep...
  10. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Was hoping someone would find some humor in that .
AADD (adult attention deficit disorder) is fairly common .
I even get a case of it occasionally. :)
  11. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

    OK thanks for the input/help.
NOT brooding time yet, 10* F this morning.
  12. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Not to get off topic but am i suppose to put pollen supplement on my remaining hive or is that
one of those some do , some don't kind of thing .

  14. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

    I appreciate the helpful replies.
Any suggestions on how to keep my only remaining hive alive till pollen/flowers bloom other than adding sugar?
If I can't keep this remaining hive alive this...
  15. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Both hives have upper entrances in the inner cover and were being used despite the bottom entrances plugged up with dead bees.
I used a standard dose of MAQS in August both hives.
    Possible what...
  16. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Yeah i don't think there was any honey left in that hive as light as the boxes were. Didn't have a hive tool with me and it is a ways to the shop through two feet of snow still
so didn't get to do a...
  17. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Appreciate it, it is tough being a newbee.
  18. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

We have had a few days in the 40s here recently, bees were flying .
I suppose its possible that one hive went through 4lbs sugar in 2 weeks and ended up starved. Being a newb i wouldn't know how...
  19. Re: Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

Well I am just a newb too this being my 2nd winter with bees.
I suspect the dead hive was robbed after they died but what do I know.
  20. Just when i thought my bees had made it through the winter..... UGH

And it was the hive i thought was the strongest going into winter.
Had put sugar on both hives about two weeks ago and they were looking good I thought then. They had both been out flying recently...
