  1. Re: Pollen Supplement Dried Poweder Eggs Versus Raw Egg

The Ontario Recipe is is exactly what I've been playing with :-) I am using raw whole eggs as they are so much cheaper. The first run I did, I had the moisture content for raw egg calculated wrong....
  2. Re: Labor Cost Overwintering Bees In California?

Oops! Drlonzo, that would be a 1.00 each time he get's into the hive to feed or add pollen sub.
  3. Labor Cost Overwintering Bees In California?

Anyone hiring someone to feed your bees while they overwinter in California? I'd like to hear some ideas on what a reasonable labor cost would be per hive to have someone feed my bees during the...
  4. Re: Pollen Supplement Dried Poweder Eggs Versus Raw Egg

    Ian,

It's shouldn't be an issue. Clean eggs are fairly sterile and the lemon juice acts to lower the PH and acts as a preservative.

    Re: Protein patty supplementation

Angel, let's hope someone on the forum will be able to tell us. I've made a couple batches using raw egg and the bees seem to love it.
  7. Pollen Supplement Dried Poweder Eggs Versus Raw Egg

Several pollen substitute recipes call for dried whole egg. I am wondering if there is a significant difference nutritionally between using raw egg versus dried powdered whole eggs? I know we need to...

    Re: Protein patty supplementation

I have been playing with the Ontario recipe listed on Randy Oliver's scientificbeekeeping.com As dried whole egg is expensive, I used raw egg. From what I read, an average moisture content is 75...

    Re: Setting Up Mating Nucs

Good thought Kevin! Don the fat bee man has a neat design for baby nucs, think I'll make a few this week end. It's a one time cost, so making wise use of space makes sense, easier to transport as...

    Re: Setting Up Mating Nucs

    Hi Kevin,

I guess what I am really wondering is this. If I can purchase an 8 frame deep for 7.50. Why would I spend the same amount or more on a mini nuc? I was thinking of just taking a frame of...

    Re: Setting Up Mating Nucs

Question! What is the advantage of using a mating nuc versus using a deep frame with bees in a regular deep?

Re: Time to get nervous # 2

Very Cool! Typically how long does the bloom last once it starts? I am curious as this is a new experience for me with bees down in the almonds around Bakersfield. I've only have 14 down there but...

Were these early bloom variety? Also along the same question, how far behind the early bloom almonds do the later blooming variety bloom?
  16. Re: What to do with overwintered hives that are weak

Rick, I let them fight it out :-)
  17. Re: What to do with overwintered hives that are weak

I agree with beepro! It's more than just keeping them warm. Queens tend to not lay more then the nurse bees can handle. You will either need to add bees from a package or combine. I combined three...
  18. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

Thanks to everyone for the excellent responses. They are all very helpful.
  19. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

    Michael,

I guess I have that same question. If the queen happens to be in the second box, will she just climb right back in the entrance of the bottom box after having been shaken on the ground?...
  20. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

BMAC, this makes sense. I suppose without needing to shake bees one could take a third box and add brood to it and place an excluder between the 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd box and do the same. This...
  21. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

CaBees, they are all double deeps. The queens in everyone so far have been laying in both deeps. It's amazing.
  22. Re: Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

Michael, let me see if I understand this.
    1. Shake bees off some brood comb and place that in an empty box along with honey stores. This becomes the new bottom box.
    2. Place a queen excluder on...
  23. Best way to make splits when your hives are full of bees?

I just returned from helping a friend bring back 90 hives from the California Almond Pollination. His hives are overflowing with bees. Kind of looks like a beer mug poured to fast. We have enough...

    Re: Pierco Frames and Uncapper?

I love pierco frames. Opening a box of pierco frames and dropping them into a honey super takes all of 20 seconds.

    Almond Bloom Length

I am curious how long the almond bloom usually lasts? Any guesses what date it will last through in the Bakersfield area?
