Re: Swarms Attracted to Existing Hives?

Yes, I've gotten swarms that landed in empty hives in my backyard. The first time the box was empty and never had bees in it.
  2. Re: How long Before Queen lays in new comb ?

I have a magnifying glass that I keep with me that I use, but I will give an LED light a shot as well.

    Re: Feeding without stimulating?

Feed them 2:1. 1:1 will stimulate them, 2:1 should make them want to pack it away.
  5. Re: How long Before Queen lays in new comb ?

If it is in the middle of the brood nest and she is in the mood to lay, she will lay it up. One thing about fresh comb, it is really, really hard to see eggs in it, since they are white on white....
  6. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

I'm not worried about them reusing capping. They can't use it all for sure, and besides, you will have to pull these in the winter. Clean them for next year. Not exactly sure how that is done though.

    Re: North AL/Southern TN folks??!??!!

I'm not down there, but I have drones in a southwest Virginia colony. I did a double take the first time I saw one over a week ago. You may have them before you think.

    Re: Thoughts on trap idea.

I don't think the entrance location is that important. I wouldn't put it on the top though :) I think OdFrank said that he had some with the entrance on the bottom in the past.

    Re: Thoughts on trap idea.

Not sure why you need to drill a hole in the side of a brood box. Couldn't you just use an entrance reducer to achieve the same effect?

Re: Swarm Trap With No Comb

It can happen. I've had one fly right into a never used top bar nuc. If they find it and it is the best space they will probably take it. One thing about that nuc that got the swarm, it had been out...

    Re: New to Forum

Yes, 120 degree total angle. Kind of like the angle of a honey comb. So one hive upside down on another would be a hexagon.

Either way, the joints look awesome, My ends are just butted up to a...
  14. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

I don't think they have delivered a frame yet to a customer (M. Bush got his free!). So they may end up with 8 million by time the campaign is over, but they will need to deliver 8 million dollars...

    Re: Cutout Hive Volume

I just find the comb less bendy with a medium cut than a deep. It's one of those skills that the more you do it the better you get (I assume) but I don't get to do it often (don't know that I want...

Re: Aggressive Top Bar Hives Dilemma

I would do like Harley said, but I have never had a hot hive either. I have some that are meaner than others, but nothing like yours.

If you could move them all out until they mellow out it would...

Re: Wintering a Top Bar Hive

I haven't experienced moisture issues in my TBHs. Is there some mold, yes, but it doesn't rain down moisture on them. What is the hive configuration? It may be something about your location. I don't...

Re: Top Entrance -- Pros & Cons?

I made a vent bar and they propolized it really good. I guess they didn't like the screen door.

Re: Top bar hive entrance front or side?

I have both, but I like the side entrances towards one end, maybe three or four inches in from the end. Mainly I do this to get the brood nest on one end and the angled side keeps the entrances dry...

Re: Bottom width for a top bar hive?

With 30 degree sides that are 1x12's I use a 1x8 for the bottom.

    Re: New to Forum

Dang! Box joints on a TBH! I don't think I have seen that before, I wish I could make those! I think you should reduce the height of the entrances, I can't tell, but they seem to be a bit tall. They...

    Re: Cutout Hive Volume

It is a lot easier to use mediums that deeps. Narrow strips of comb are easier to put in the frames.
  23. Re: coating inside of hive body in beeswax?

I use some wax in my TBHs, mainly just to close up some of the small gaps, and to give it less of a "just put together" smell. I would like to try a propolis tinture. What type of alcohol do you use...

You are right cub, only save brood, everything else goes. Honey can be feed back, but don't frame it up.
