Re: Built a TBH and have questions

both my hives tried to cross comb once they got to the 1.5 bars. Going back I would make all my bars 1.25 and have spacers handy when needed.

    Re: first successful install

Well it is official, this hive is completely dead except for the beetles on moths that have moved in. It was in the 70's last weekend. The other hive was very active so I decided to see what was...

    Re: first successful install

I hate to say it but it looks like this hive is dead. We had a nice sunny day in the 50's and I still did not see any movement. Peaking through the window, there were a couple of non moving bees on...
  8. Re: Which length is best for a Top Bar Hive? 3 or 4 feet?

I want to say my first hive was pretty close to 100 liters. That one got 3/4 filled with comb on the first year of a package. My second one I added about 5 inches to the length so it is 4' 5" or so...

    Transfering to larger hive

I need to transfer one of my hives to a bigger hive and I am not sure what the best way to do it is. The new hive is going to be in the same spot as the little hive. The spot has a tree limb that...

Re: Bee explosion and utter mess!

What kind of bars do you have? Mine build perfectly, unbelievably straight comb. I have 2 hives, both using wedge bars.
  12. Re: Bees from pouring out between the frames on inspection - cannot close gaps

If you lightly bump the bees between the bar they will move. You can also push the bars together so only one bee can fit between and then use something about 1/8" thick like a rod or yard stick. push...

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

I checked last night through the window and it looks like they are gone. There were a bunch of bees so I'm not 100% positive though.

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

I did not notice anything inside any of the 3 cups but I will keep an eye on them. If I do find them capped what should my next step be?

    Re: Are these swarm cells?

No that is not a capped cell. I think they are just festooning there.

I have been putting empty bars between fully drawn comb. Is that what you mean? they have 2 empty bars in the nest right now...

    Are these swarm cells?

I am kind of stumped about this. I have been keeping plenty of bars in the brood chamber and there are 4 or 5 bars past the last built comb.

Tung oil is a great oil to mix with beeswax. I get the stuff sold on Amazon in the can with the green label.

This is all scrap left over form concrete work. The drum sander cleans it up really well.

Do you have little leprechauns that go around and kill queen bees? You are having the worst luck.

How much do you have invested so far?
