    What is a brood cycle?

I see references to 'brood cycle' or to first or second brood cycle. What is a brood cycle, how long is it, and why does it happen? I thought once the queen started laying she did so continuously,...

    BeeKeeping Supplies in Las Vegas?

I am headed for Las Vegas tomorrow and need a few supplies (queen excluder, etc). Google does not show any supply sellers there. Does anyone know if there is one?
  4. Re: Manipulation of Deep Frames of Brood in Medium Hive?

Guess I will have to find a queen excluder. Hate to order a single item.

    Re: Robbing?

I am a new beekeeper with a single hive. A few days ago the hive was swarming (no, not a swarm) with bees, thousands of them, all over. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon, and about 75 degrees. I...
  6. Manipulation of Deep Frames of Brood in Medium Hive?

I got a deep 4 frame nuc about 6 weeks ago and started my very first hive. The 4 deep frames were installed into a medium box with a 3" spacer, along with 4 medium frames. After 4 weeks the bees...

Re: Long Term Trap to Full Hive?

Thanks, Cleo, that is very helpful, since I do not have a good sense of how quickly things may move along. Hopefully I will be able to get a small frame of brood from my new hive when I need it.

Long Term Trap to Full Hive?

My daughter has bees in a tree that I want to get for the genetics. (She also wants to have the bees gone.) It is about 70 miles away, so cannot monitor or maintain on a daily or even weekly basis....

Re: First Time Is A Failure

No, I am not at all sure I got the queen. The swarm was in a tight ball about the size of a small football, so I assumed I did, but am not sure.
  10. Re: Catch Swarm in Nuc or 8 Frame Medium, which is best and why?

I will have both a nuc and an 8 frame box if I ever get another chance!

Re: First Time Is A Failure

#6: Understand, but am so new do not have any comb yet. Am reluctant to raid my brand new hive which is still in only one medium.

Keep the mistakes coming, they are all helpful and will help me...
  12. Re: Catch Swarm in Nuc or 8 Frame Medium, which is best and why?

Re: First Time Is A Failure

Had only partially filled with 4 (thought I needed room to drop the swarm in). When I opened it they had slid around. That is #5!

    First Time Is A Failure

Went to get an easy swarm today, never had tried before. Got them off the small tree into a medium with 4 frames in it with no problem. Thought I had blocked the entrance. By the time I got...
  15. Catch Swarm in Nuc or 8 Frame Medium, which is best and why?

There is a small (3 lb?) swarm at the local Home Depot that I can get, or they will kill it. I have never captured a swarm before, but am ready to go. Is it better to catch them in a nuc, or just...

Re: What flowers make honey taste bad?

Don't know about what tastes bad, but I had a small sample of chile pequin hot honey and that is when I had to get a hive!

Do I need to renew lemongrass oil?

I have a couple of traps out that have been in place for several weeks. How long will lemongrass oil or pheromones last? Do they need to be renewed periodically?

I really like the looks of your long hive. Can you provide more pictures showing the interior and entrance(s)?

    Re: Newbee Trying Trapping

Thanks, I am using foundationless frames and will put the rest in. Probably not a problem though, Radar, since it is on top of my earth sheltered home and I only check it about once an hour!
