What would you call this product

Got a friend that bought a what I would call a approximately 2" square pillow of beeswax/oil product that when rubbed between your hands, leaves enough of a coating to moisturize your hands. Would...

    Re: Swarm absconded?

Ya, the hive itself makes the calls, the queen's along for the ride. My mentor thinks that there's control bees, but I like to think it's a collective decision, besides how many scout bees (the...

    Re: Performed artificial swarm…swarmed anyway

I would be more concerned with the queen in the nuc. Get her into a ten frame box or your going to lose her too. The parent hive isn't going let a swarm issue unless they have the recourses to...

Re: Question regarding a failing hive.

There's also the therory of all hives have laying workers and the house bees keep them in check. I think Micheal Bush discusses it on his site.
  7. Re: My hives need protection from Carpenter Bee damage

I don't know if they're selling the traps or what, but there's a YouTube video on traps, I just Googled carpenter bees. From the looks of it, wouldn't be to hard to make.

Re: too chilly for a split?

If you're letting the split raise their own queen, make the split and seperate with a queen excluder (the split on top of course). If you're introducing the queen, you'll need a snellgrove board....

    Re: Hive merge experience (mistake)

My guess is they were aligned with laying workers and absconded. The only thing you could have done different is given them some brood before you moved them, that would've given them a anchor point,...

    Re: Tell tale signs

Patience, the queen's released, they got feed. The only way you can be 110% certain if the queen's there and laying is to pull frames and look for eggs/queen.
I want to get into my hives too, but...
  11. Re: Does a new queen only have one mating window.

Try less smoke, queens get panicky easy sometimes.
  12. Re: Harvesting leftover honey in spring, any suggestions?

Ya, the bees'll take that honey and make more bees. This time of the year, that's the ticket to a strong hive for splitting.
  13. Re: Does a new queen only have one mating window.

Give her a chance, she's going to start laying mated or not. Given the fact you don't have a exact time when the egg was hatched and the weather, it might be another week before she starts laying.

    Re: No to Nosema?

Ya, just keep a eye on it. Swarm bees gorge w/ honey before leaving the hive, might be poop, might be regurgitated honey.

Re: New beekeeper and All my bees died!

Ya, a 3" spacer is what caused that train wreck, especially if it was vented. That ring sounds like a setup for overwintering so you can put sugar on and the venting is for warm moist air to escape,...
  16. Re: using old equipment with termites in the boxes

The termites nest in soil, using tubes to get to their foragage. Once removed from the nest area they'll die, take a ice pick or scratch awl and start poking the wood and you'll find where they've...

Next time you do a inspection, use very little smoke and she how she acts. If she's a runner and got panicky from the smoke, she might've fell and had her bell rung. When they're heavy with eggs it's...

Re: bumble bees crowding out honey bees?

If they've got better forage, they'll go for that. Little nectar in blueberries, I've heard you've got to feed bees when they're pollinating blueberries.

    Re: Honey Bound?

Maybe a imbalance of nurse bees to foragers, maybe they're robbing a dead out.
I'd check the queen in a couple days to see if she's slowing down on you.
