    Re: Keeping Combe straight tricks

My bars are a little over 23 inches long (inside the hive). I have a 9 inch slit on the side of my hives near the end. I designated this end as the front. Whenever I add frames, I add the new...

    Re: Possible Treatement free podcast.

Here is the link. There won't be any hard feelings on my part if you don't give me a plug. I am just enjoying the experience in its own right. Plus I wanted to show that anyone can keep bees.

    Re: Possible Treatement free podcast.

I would recommend doing the podcast if for nothing other than the experience of it. You can use it like a journal for beekeeping and it will make you think of more things related to beekeeping.

  6. Re: Learn wood working the best way... With mistakes!

Just wait until you have made 30 or more of some component, and find out it is short by 2 inches. or the cut was suppose to be angled the other way.:ws:

I recommend just making one frame or box...
  7. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

Congrats on your first hive Rairdog. I remember how apprehensive I was about hiving my first two packages. It is also one of those things that should be on a bucket list. The hardest part now is...

    Re: Bee and neighbor problem

I can sympathies with you on this one. The real question is what do you think is the right thing to do? Next, is to consider what is most expedient. Your solution is going to be somewhere between...

    Re: Robber screen designs...

I use robbing screens that open down. They work just fine. Four inches of screen down below the entrance is all I use. I wasted some wood by using a table saw to cut out the inside of a 1x4. I...

Re: Raising vs. Buying a queen?

I was wandering if your queenless colony has any queen cells. I noticed that my nuc didn't start bring in pollen in mass until they finally got their queen cells. This was after I added two more...
  11. Re: Please help me with the final setup of my first TBH

If you don't go with the gap between the first top bar and the front of the hive for an entrance, don't forget to to use a quarter to three eights inch spacer where that gap would be. This will keep...
  12. Re: Is it a bad idea to inspect a hive while the bees are bearding?

Thanks for the warning about the end of the bars. Maybe, that won't be my next mistake.
  13. Re: Is it a bad idea to inspect a hive while the bees are bearding?

I am going to make that my mantra.
  14. Is it a bad idea to inspect a hive while the bees are bearding?

I just incurred my first bee sting ever. I brought this on myself by dropping some frames when I first oppened the hive. There were a lot of bees behind the follower board that I wasn't expecting...

This has been tested on gusts up to 80 mph.

You could use two straps and four anchors and lower the hive to 6 inches off of the ground.

    Re: Hurricane

I use those ground screws from lowes. If your soil is hard, I recommend the shorter screws. In Florida I, suspect the soil is sandy. You'll want to use the longer ones.

    Re: Robbing Related Questions

Glad to hear you got the robbing under control. I started this year with robbing screens right from the start and haven't taken them off yet. The bees seem fine with the arrangement.

    Re: Robbing Related Questions

You can get away with using screen door screen for a robbing screen. That is what is on my first two hives. #8 hardware cloth does make a nicer robbing screen.
