    When?
  2. Re: How to tell if I have a laying worker or a new queen?

Not hard for me...I took the photo for my collection of bad/good patterns. The colony had a poor queen. No disease, no drone layer, not a laying worker colony.

Re: What time of day to feed?

When I feed, I take a load of filled feeder cans to the yards in the morning, weigh and feed all day long, and do the same every day until the job is finished. Usually takes a couple weeks. I see no...

    Re: New England vacation

I'll be around. Let me know. 802-324-1427

For the best colors, depending on the season, I would recommend two routes.

A drive up through the Connecticut River valley on rte 5, and into the...
  6. Re: Why does one hive beard and other not

Everything but population. The extra population in the bearding colony is on the outside.
  7. Re: What happens to the honey the bee's eat during a hive inspection

They don't eat it, they store it in their honey stomachs and I assume they put it back into cells afterward.

Re: White mark on some of my bees?

Every August, the same question is asked, and every August the same debate. Search the archives under jewelweed....

Here's a good one from that search.

Some good photos [#3 to #10] and an...
  9. Re: How to tell if I have a laying worker or a new queen?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Here's what you describe, but in a queen-right condition.

    Re: Buckfast Nucs

No more stock comes from Buckfast Abbey. There are several Buckfast breeders in Europe...UK, Austria and Denmark. Unfortunately, we in the US aren't allowed to import stock from those countries....
  11. Re: Why are there still so many drones in one hive?

There bees are still raising drones here.

    Re: Nuc advise

Why not if they need it.
  13. Re: Ideal configuration within wintering hives in a very cold climate

I like to use the drawing in the HHB to illustrate how the bees set up their winter broodnest.

For my bees, here in Vermont, I would want a medium super of honey on top.

Fischer's Bee Quick? Didn't work for me.
  15. Re: Timing of when to start feeding for winter stores of honey

I believe you're correct that the theory comes from how bees winter in the north, where we have very cold temperatures and no cleansing flights for months. Here, our bees regulate the core...
  16. Re: Queen right hive and laying workers.

Several years ago, in ABJ, there was a brief on a study about re-queening LW colonies with queen cells. I think the study was looking to see if there was a difference in % acceptance in LW colonies,...

I have three notebooks. One spiral notebook for my nucleus colonies, one for my production apiaries, and a yard sheet for each production apiary for my breeding program.

    The spiral notebooks have...

I would say so. That's what I do with all my production colonies. Tip hive, slide scale under hive, tip hive up onto scale , balance, read weight, remove scale. I want a real weight, not a formula to...

    Re: Incredible Double Story Nuc

Honey flow. On a good one, they'll fill the combs with honey faster than they can with brood, so the amount of brood they raise for you is limited.

Here, I would guess the green pollen to be Purple Loosestrife.
