  1. Re: How many of you started with just one hive?

    I started with one colony.
Get involved with a local club. While having two colonies provides resources that may increase the chances of survival - as scorpianmain noted - nearby club members may...

Re: How Cold Before SHB Die?

Certainly not as big of a problem as it is in southern climes, but SHB is definitely alive and well in Indiana. Last winter was the coldest in at least 40 years, and this summer many Indiana beeks...

    Re: Queen Life Cycle/Swarm Cycle

Agree with FlowerPlanter: the bees aren't watching the calendar. The will usually swarm after queen cells are capped, but before the first virgin emerges, which, as you noted, is window of 8-9 days....

    Re: Walk-away split question

You need enough nurse bees to cover the frames. What I do instead of shake nurse bees is this:
    1) Pull the frames of eggs/brood from the donor hive and shake off all the bees. Replace with empty...
  5. Oct 25th Indiana State Beekeepers Mtg

The Indiana State Beekeepers Associate will hold its Fall Conference Oct 25th in Franklin, IN.

Guest speaker is Judge Dan O'Hanlon from West Virgina, speaking on "Breeding Queens in the...
  6. Re: Winter entrance, open or close it down?

I believe you need to protect against mice regardless. Many beeks use hardware cloth over the entrances year 'round and don't worry about closing it up for winter.

Re: Winter Hive Weight in Indiana

I've always heard 80 lbs for central Indiana (although right now I'd be thrilled if I could get my colonies to 60 lbs!).

Re: Video Movie- "More Than Honey"

The hand pollination is necessary because of the decision to grow a (very profitable) pear variety that does not bloom when the other types of pears bloom. Since this pear requires...

Re: Video Movie- "More Than Honey"

Saw it on Netflix. Not bad, but it did present large commercial operations in a particularly unfavorable light. My biggest gripe is that they perpetuated the myth about Chinese having to...

    Re: Central Indiana Raising Bees

    Hello and Welcome!

There are a couple of local beekeeping clubs over your way - good way to find mentors and get connected to nearby beekeepers:...

    Re: brood in super

Workers will eliminate the new queen.

If the split is mostly nurse bees, they will stay with the brood. No need to block the entrance. I was unclear reading your description of the split -are...

    Re: Hi from Indiana

    Hello and Welcome!

You may be interested in getting involved with a local beekeeping club - good way to connect with nearby beekeepers. I think the nearest one to you would be the Bedford...

Re: Shaded hive location advice please

While full sun is recommended as optimal, many of us don't have optimal locations. I live in the woods and my bees are in shade most of the day. Yes, they would probably be busier and produce more...

    Re: Beekeeping Books

Lots of good suggestions here. I'll add a new one, Bee-Sentials, a Field Guild by Lawrence Connor. It's more of a reference book for beginners than a "how to". If you like pictures, you'll love this.

You might try contacting a nearby beekeeping club:

Re: When to Feed New Package?

I wouldn't. If I'm using packages to re-fill deadouts, and there are frames of honey, I don't feed.

    Re: What type of extractor?

First, if it’s important to you - Maxant, Dadant, and I believe, Kelley, are American made.

Second, you’ll want to know the gauge of the stainless steel. Smaller numbers mean thicker metal. Look...

    Re: Swarm Trap Placement

The books say a few hundred yards - quarter mile. I say put them where it's convenient. Mine are within 20-30 yards of my hives.

    Re: "supered" 2 weeks ago

Bees draw out comb when they feel they need to, and won't otherwise. Although you see things blooming, unless there is a flow on and the bees feel they need more space, they won't draw. It could be...

    Re: Bee Supplement

There should be plenty of pollen available by now without you having to supplement, in addition to the fact that small hive beetles love pollen patties.

    Re: Throwing out Drones

Did you have a cold snap? Sometimes in spring when they are building up a change in weather can cause them to put on the brakes. Pollen suddenly isn't available and drones are expendable.
  23. Re: Strong hive with ? Queen cell Question

As JRG13 said, bees often make queen cups. If there's nothing in it - no worries.

    Re: preparing to swarm

That's generally true, but not always true. It's also generally true that if they are going to swarm, you'll see several swarm cells, not just one (or two). Location of the queen cell is just one...

    Re: What smoker to buy

For a smoker, I'd recommend one with a shield/guard. For hive tools, get more than one. I always carry at least two, a standard one, and a Maxant (also known as an Australian).
