  1. Re: Who wants to talk about unusually warm winter weather?

    Re: OA Dribble

You've probably seen it ..but just in case you didn't Randy Oliver has just learned to time it out with his sprayer.

"If you use a garden sprayer (adjusted to shoot a soft stream, rather than a...
  3. Poll: Re: Treat for Varroa mites or let them suffer & die..........

I agree with Michael, poor options.

How about a "Work towards treatment free, responsibly" option?

I like Randy Oliver's "Rant", "Allowing domesticated package colonies to die year after year...

Re: Why or why not Carniolans?

I like them. They winter well on less stores. But watch them come spring, they do like to swarm but ARE manageable.

    Re: Foundation or not?

In essence, try foundation and foundationless. Try wax, try plastic. Decide what you prefer. They all have their pros and cons. Now that you have everyone's opinions, get a feel for what you prefer.

Re: "Sustainability" in the small apiary

It think that it is quite possible. As Mr. Palmer says, you can be sustainable yet purchase some local queens when needed.

I think that you should have one nuc per production hive (my goal) going...

    Re: Insurance

That is not quite true. A hobbyist can sell and even write off costs as long as those write offs dont exceed the profit. A business can write off even when making no profit.

Re: Some bees crawling in grass in front of hive

You might think of collecting 100 or so of the walkers and send a sample to the bee lab. I think it is free and a good way to check.

Re: My first year with 8 frame mediums

Yup. I use only 8 frame mediums. I over wintered one hive in 3 boxes, the other hive in 5 boxes. Both survived our long, cool, damp Pacific Northwest weather.
