    Re: Bees Prepping for Winter

Steven, I wonder if wind protection has anything to do with it? Your hives are much more protected than mine.

    Re: Bees Prepping for Winter

All 4 the year old langs swarmed. The two new ones from caught swarms this spring didn't.

    Re: Bees Prepping for Winter

    Colleen,

The hive is a last Spring's BeeWeaver package. They swarmed 2 months after putting them in, so it is now a cross between BeeWeaver's and local drones. The none of the langs are reducing...

    Re: Bees Prepping for Winter

My TB has done the same over the last week. They have closed a 1 inch hole down to an entrance the size for two bees to enter. Evidently they know what they are doing :)

    Re: Plastic storage tub TBH

If you have already tested with 150 lbs the sides probably won't spread. If they did it sure would be a mess though. I'll look forward to seeing how this progresses. It's the first storage bin...

    Re: Plastic storage tub TBH

I can see how this would work in Florida where the temps are not too low. Go to Walmart and by a hive for $6 :) Do you think the tub can withstand the weight of the honey without the sides...

Re: Beekeeping is a very cheap hobby

Well said. Actually $20/lb may be a little understated in my case :)

    Re: Wax melt in progress...

    See above.
  10. Re: Why so many dead bees around decapping leftovers?

Fighting. I don't know why they do it since they aren't protecting hive stores, but I've experienced the same thing. I no longer set equipment/cappings out for them to clean up, just for this...
  11. Re: Need to feed while on vacation. Any suggestions?

Sure you can. If they need it, they'll eat it, if not it can stay in the hive until they do.

    Re: Top Bar Hive plans

Does the Kenyon design have a follower board? I didn't see that mentioned in Michael's description.

    Re: Service from Dadant!

I've never had a complaint about Dadant either from the local store (Paris, TX). Always friendly -- the the guy that gathers the order in the warehouse is great!!

Re: Got a Mess in the Hive

Steven, don't quit your lang, keep it as a learning experiment like I am doing with the TBH. I agree you do squish more bees with a lang. But I smothered some bees this weekend in the TBH by trying...

Re: Opinions on Jawadis Bee Suits

You will find that they are well made.
  19. Re: Third week inspection question? Are they building enough comb?

I think you are fine since you're seeing capped brood and larva. They may be a little slow but will pick up quickly once the brood starts emerging.
  20. Re: My bees are getting ready to swarm....what to do, quickly?

Here is what a swarm from your hive would look like:

  24. Poll: Re: vote, install package in middle of hive or on one end? vote!

whalers, if she isn't out in 3 days, pull the cork from the end without the candy and let her loose.
  25. Poll: Re: vote, install package in middle of hive or on one end? vote!

Voted on the end because like Steven said, that is where the entrance is.
