    Re: uncapping for 100 hives

We are around 300 hives right now and expanding. The clarifier is Maxant's largest one, 28 gallon. They could have a better designed clarifier. It only has one baffle, there should be more. We will...

    Re: buying a cappings spinner?

I agree with the others that say stay away from the JR. We have the senior and it does the job but there are issues with this system. see my other posts here. If you can go the spin float way. Yes,...

    Re: uncapping for 100 hives

We are using the Maxant chain uncapper over the spinner. We will not be keeping this system. It does a good job of uncapping but that is where it ends. The spinner is kept running all the time. It...

    Re: Notice to Ian

Not all our yards will make that 6%. Anything under 20 is good. Our early splits are done with queens from Chile. Once thing get flowering we will raise a lot of our own queens. We do not feed a lot...

    Re: Notice to Ian

Same in our part of the worlds as well Ian. The odd poplar is starting to bud but we need more heat. Looking at the forecast, that is not an option just yet. We have had feed out for about 3 weeks....

  8. Re: Questions for the Canuck prairie / peace river folks

If you deliver in May you would find buyers across the prairies be it 1 or 1001. Give it a go and I am sure you will be rewarded.

    Re: Winter losses ?

We did not have a great deal of snow, I would say about average. I think what helped us out was there was no break in the temps. When we get a few warm days the queens will start laying, bees stay...

    Re: Winter losses ?

We got to a 3rd yard that had 50 hives. It looks like about 4 dead in that yard. Hard to believe after the winter we had they have come through this well.

    Re: Winter losses ?

According to weather stats we have just had the coldest winter since 1898. We still have a lot of snow but the temps reached 11 c yesterday so it was warm enough that the bees were starting to fly....

I think the weatherman is just like a politician, they tell you what you want to here even though it is not the truth.

    Re: Syrup in cold temps

I am with Ian on this one. If you have frames of honey you should be good. Once they start raising brood you will need to feed. I am not a fan of frame feeders. They add a lot of moisture and are...

    Re: Notice to Ian

I have not been able to give them a good check as of yet. One day when the temp was not to bad I went to a yard. There seemed to be bees at a lot of the top entrances so fingers are crossed. One good...

Re: Its been a cold windy winter

We are in the South East corner of Sask. and snow is about normal maybe even a little less. Maybe all this wind is moving our snow over to you Allen.

Re: Its been a cold windy winter

I do not think the bees use as much feed when it gets cold. All activity in the hive slows right down. To me it seems they use the most when it warms to where there is more activity in the hive. We...

    Re: open drum feeding

That is a tough question to answer. Strong yards will go through a pail a day if there is nothing else for them. The last couple of falls have been frost free for quite some time so ours get a lot of...

    Re: open drum feeding

We use 5 gal pails with tiny holes drilled around the outside of the rim. It is much like using the pail feeders except the holes are not in the center of the lid. We invert the pails, set them on...

    Re: Indoor wintering

We would be interested in ackages from BC. Another thought is how early could one have queens ready as well.
