    Re: Dearth in Connecticut??

The flow has slowed up here, bee balm and milkweed starting to go by. I'm seeing some early goldenrod, and am waiting for the knotweed to bloom, but that won't be for a while. Extracted 14 frames...
  4. Re: How do some guys go without any kind of protective gear what so ever?

I wear a bee jacket most of the time. A long-time beekeeper friend usually wears a veil, but says "if you ever see me wearing the full bee suit, just keep on driving".

Re: Who's got a Bee Blog?

I have two - one for my bees (http://artisticbee.blogspot.com/) and one for a photographic project I am starting (http://thebeekeeperproject.blogspot.com/). I don't update the bee blog as often as I...

Nothing yet, although I have to check my Carniolans this weekend. They build up quickly.

Re: ever tried to talk someone out of it?

I have had a couple of friends that wanted to have bees, so I invited them over to see my hives, explained the costs and work that goes into it, and suggested that they take the bee school that our...

Re: No larvae yet in April in NH?

I just saw larvae and capped brood this past weekend in central CT. It's finally warming up. I'd make sure they have enough food (and maybe a pollen patty), and give them another week to get going.

    Re: Swimming pool?

You might check into non-chlorine water treatments. My girls were visiting the neighbor's pool until they changed from the chlorine. Not sure what they are using, but they say they don't see as many...

    Re: The girls made it

I've lost 1 so far (out of 4), and another may be weak, but is wintering low so I can't tell what's going on. Gave them dry sugar and pollen patties yesterday. Syrup as soon as it warms up.
  13. Re: Order from Hardeman, Gardner's, or Wilbanks Apiaries?

+1 for Wilbanks. They are very helpful folks, sent me one of the last queens last fall on short notice. I've had their package bees for years and any problems were the fault of the beekeeper (me).

Re: Good Luck Tomorrow New England Bees.

Nemo brought us more snow than I've seen in a while, about 36" basically overnight. Spent the weekend clearing it out. Here's a photo of my hives - http://artisticbee.blogspot.com/

Re: Good Luck Tomorrow New England Bees.

I'm about as ready as I can be - everything gassed up, extra water, munchies, etc. At least if it snows a lot it will insulate the hives some for tomorrow night when it is supposed to be about 5F.

    Re: Wintering in Connecticut

I have 3 hives of Italians that are doing the same thing, and a hive of Carniolans that cluster low. Checked them the other day and gave them a bit of dry sugar (the hive weights seem fine though)....
  19. Re: Attention couch potatoes (or is it couch pota'to) time to check the bees!!

It's about 50 degrees here today, all 4 hives are flying. I did a quick weight heft and popped the top covers for a quick look, all seems well. (fingers crossed)

Re: No queen this late in the season- requeen?

    Re: Division board feeder

I have the Mann Lake #FD-845 Pro Feeders with the cap and ladders. They hold about 2 gallons, and replace 2 frames in the hive body.
