  1. Re: Pound of dead bees in front of each hive!

If it is a pesticide or other toxic issue, I would be hesitant about how contaminated the wax may be in the hive now, and the safety of the honey.

Edit: I don't know what a water retention area...
  2. Re: Pound of dead bees in front of each hive!

That was my thought, but I didn't want to sound paranoid.

I have a hard time even looking at that photo. Like headline newspaper material.
  3. Re: Pound of dead bees in front of each hive!

How tragic, Joebrad. At this point I think I'd be placing a call to the state bee inspector, if you have one who will come out and look at the hive.

Edit: Several have now mentioned the...

    Re: Major Problem

I wear my personal protection device, which means instead of relying on a smoker I suit up and am pretty much impervious to the bees. Without the suit then yes, I would be much more dependent on my...

    Re: Major Problem

br - I'm in the seacoast area, which is only about an hour outside of Boston. The scales on the hives that were declining in weight were also in the seacoast area, altho I don't know where exactly.

    Re: Major Problem

That's not really fair. I almost never use a smoker and my bees are almost never aggressive. At certain times of the year they get more aggressive (defensive) and that's when you do need a smoker....

Re: So what do I do next time?

25 bucks? You got off light! Mine was $40.

Yup, I scraped the 2 queen cups with larvae but that didn't do the trick. I could have pulled the cage right then and there and should have. Next time:...

Re: So what do I do next time?

I had always heard - or thought I did, I'll have to check around again - that you check the queen at 3 days to make sure she's out of the cage. That's the way I've done it in the past and never had a...

    Re: WeakNUC need help!!!!!

The pictures you took of the eggs look good. What will be interesting is how the capped brood will look - probably beautiful. That should be a big boost to your population, at least in 3 weeks.
  12. Re: Pound of dead bees in front of each hive!

Are those all bees on the ground in that first picture? Wow. How many bees are still left in that hive?

Amazing. My hunch would be pesticide.

    Re: WeakNUC need help!!!!!

A - Just curious, how long ago did you make the nuc? Because remember, it takes 3 weeks for the brood to hatch into new bees, so it takes a while for their population to build.

    The best place for...
  14. Re: I think I'm queenless, or maybe a new queen, suggestions?

sbees - You're in my proximity. I was saying on another thread that the state bee inspector was telling us in club tonight that he's getting a lot of calls from people thinking they have no queen. He...

I admit to not reading every post in this thread, but I'm wondering why you feel you need to go into this hive. If it were me, and now that I believe you said they were calming down, I'd just leave...

Re: Colony Update here in MA

Went to our bee club meeting tonight. Sometimes that place is like a support group. You go in feeling really discouraged and come out all inflated again.

Thought I'd pass along a couple things...

Re: So what do I do next time?

Don't feel bad. I made up a nuc with a frame of brood that had eggs and open larvae on it also, and apparently they killed the caged queen I introduced and made queen cells. However, thinking about...
  18. Re: Is it worthwhile registering an apiary with the state?

Here in NH the benefit, I've heard, is that you are notified if the municipality is spraying, say for mosquitoes. However, it does not apply to regular Joe Blow mosquito sprayers - the private...

Our state inspector, or maybe he retired and he's the former inspector, I forget, but anyway, he told our club tonight that queens will start making winter bees around August 10th. He was basically...

    Bug identification on the milkweed

Anyone know what this 3/4" long caterpillar is? They ate all the leaves up to where they are now. I was kind of hoping it was monarch, but nah.

  23. Re: 2nd year. losing hives. need experienced help

kaizen - what in those pictures shows your mite issues? Is it because it's a bit scattered, with new larvae in between? They do slow down brood rearing mid-July I've found, the time between the...
