Re: Festooning out of the hive?

    Hah!

There's a queen cup forming at the top/middle of a frame in the new hive that has the old queen. She is confirmed to be laying eggs. I'm not sure why they keep making cups. I guess something...

Re: Festooning out of the hive?

If some did, it wasn't many. Maybe a few. It really doesn't seem like many left her. I also should add that I put queen pheremone in the new box with her so it may have helped keep them there. I've...

Re: Festooning out of the hive?

I split the hive because they were making swarm/supersedure(?) cells due to being honey bound(I think?). The queen was moved along with a few frames of honey/brood 4 blocks away into a new hive so...

Re: Festooning out of the hive?

Hmh, interesting. I didn't think it was bearding since it was early morning and cooler than it is later in the day. They also weren't in the shape of a beard since they had this long awkward looking...

    Festooning out of the hive?

About a day or two after doing a split I checked on my bees before going to work at about 6am and noticed them doing something weird. They had a small cluster at the entrance and an approximately 2...

    Re: Queen cups! HELP!

Inspected the hive just now. Single capped queen cells on frame 2 and 4. On frame 13.5(don't ask about the weird numbering) there were approximately 4-6 queen cells, one of which looked bigger and...

    Re: Queen cups! HELP!

I found the queen and after about an hour of intense shifting around I got her into the nuc along with a nice frame of nectar and brood, as well as 2 drawn out empty lang frames. I ended up having to...

My bees were hived in my top bar on April 14th. So that makes them 2 1/2 months old. They just finally filled the hive with comb.

Re: Adding native bees to my italian hive?

Ahh, yes, feral is what I meant. I know honey bees aren't native to North America. :)

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll hold off on messing around with the feral bees for now. Maybe once I...

Re: Hiving my first package ever - Questions

He said he's driving them up in a straight shot. He left today(this morning I presume), and will be back tomorrow. I'm guessing he has someone else driving with him.

Re: Hiving my first package ever - Questions

I think I'd rather leave her in there with just the candy stopper. That way they won't leave and will have to stay there for a day or two. That should give them time to get settled in and help them...

Re: Hiving my first package ever - Questions

Ah well, it's better than nothing at all. I'm not too worried about getting stung, it's more just to keep them out of my eyes/nose/ears.

Any thoughts on spray times, etc?

    Re: Lemon grass oil...

From what I've read it's best to put them at least 250 feet from an established hive that's swarming and have it high up like in a tree. Oil doesn't evaporate as fast as water but it does evaporate....

Hey guys, what kind of mesh do you use for the bottom of your top bar hives? Is there a type of wire mesh that is available at home depot? Links would be appreciated.
