Re: Help me decide the fate of my Queenie

Weedeater is gas. I don't think it's the smell, but rather the noise and the grass flying all over the place.

Re: Help me decide the fate of my Queenie

I checked my weaker hive today and I do have a laying queen. The hive isn't as "weak" anymore. I did not see the queen, but I saw a ton of eggs and lots of larva at all stages of development.

Re: Help me decide the fate of my Queenie

The hive has always been hotter, just not this hot. They've never been this defensive until recently. You make a good point about strong hive + nectar dearth=angry bees. I'm considering waiting it...

Help me decide the fate of my Queenie

I've asked in the chat and I've gotten a few recommendations, but I wanted to ask a wider audience and see what y'all think I should do.

I have two hives and a nuc, which were started from two...
  6. Re: Second Brood Box is 99% Honey & 1% Pollen

I'm having the same issue. I was planning in putting a medium on top of the deep. I have two deeps on the bottom and the second, which I added for brood, they made into honey. It's difficult to...

So now I need to know when is a good time to move them to their big girl home? How many frames drawn out?

Re: I think my bees hate foundation....

There were a TON of capped brood. Everything looked fine and the larva looked healthy. The hive was building up, but just one one side. As for the queen----they at one point tried to supercede her...

Re: I think my bees hate foundation....

They are in the middle of a field of clover. Like several acres. It's not a lot chewed, just a bit here and there. On the sides where they have chewed, they have replaced the holes with their own...

I think my bees hate foundation....

About a month ago I added a second hive body onto my hive. I took some brood from the bottom and moved it above on the top box to checkerboard. Used a mix of foundation less frames and frames with...

Re: Capped queen cells in a nuc?

Hey---I left it alone for three weeks? Can you imagine my self restraint? Haha. Ill probably wait another two weeks. It will be difficult, but I'm learning.

Re: Capped queen cells in a nuc?

It was capped when I picked it up on Mother's Day. I'm guessing it hatched out around the 22-24th? Ill check again in a few weeks. Thoughts on the capped queen cell?

Capped queen cells in a nuc?

I moved a few frames to a nuc box about three weeks ago(minus a day or two) one frame contained a capped queen cell. I checked her today. She has hatched. I couldn't see any eggs or larva. There...

    Re: KEnt Williams Hive Tool

I have one too. I like it a lot. The hook is handy.
  17. Re: Thinking foundationless or second brood box

    Interesting.

So a shallow on bottom with foundationless and a "wire" guide? Then two deeps in top? Are they foundationless as well?

A pic would be cool. I'm more of a visual learner.
  18. Re: Thinking foundationless or second brood box

Thank you! This helps quite a bit.
  19. Re: Thinking foundationless or second brood box

    This is a good idea.

I may go foundation, foundationless in a checkerboard in the empty box.
  20. Re: Thinking foundationless or second brood box

So break up the broodnest in the bottom? Put the brood up or side to side?
  21. Thinking foundationless or second brood box

It's about time to add a second brood box to one of my new hives. I'm considering foundationless. The bottom box I used foundation. How is the best way to transition? Should I move bottom frames...
  22. Is there any change in hive activity after queen has hatched?

I put a frame with a capped queen cell into a nuc a few days ago. The nuc had some activity, coming in and out but nothing intense. However, today there was a ton of foraging activity. Does this...
  23. Re: Bunch of questions from a worried newbee

Maybe a silly question---what does boost the nuc mean?
    Feed it?

Thanks for all your advice. This forum is really helpful.
  24. Re: Bunch of questions from a worried newbee

I installed two five frame nucs three weeks ago. I added five frames of foundation to each.

To make the split, I took one frame out of one hive and another frame out of the other hive---only...
