So I don't actually like yellowjackets either, but I recognize they're not the murderous purveyors of evil we generally perceive them to be. They're actually cool and beneficial little guys.. er.....
how much salt?
Thanks Ross.
To me, 6 frames, even partially drawn, sounds like a huge investment! Especially since I got to see all that larvae and the eggs, nectar, and pollen... *sigh*
yeah, they have...
Actually, Danny is an awesome guy, I agree! I bought a nuc from him last week on Wednesday, and it is totally doing great. He did the same thing for me as he did you, going thru each comb and...
all of the comb already has larvae, but not sealed brood, in it. none of the comb in this hive is older than 2 weeks, and they're building it between frames the long way, because I'm experimenting...
Jenison is how far?
I'm tempted to let the bees do what they want for a little while, till the comb hardens. right now I could hardly touch it without it giving way beneath my...
I give up. It's (past) time for me to find a mentor.
Today I went to visit my bees. Tried to re-hang the comb they built between the frames in my swarm-caught hive. Moved one comb (a very small...
The swarm of bees I hived a week and a half ago are doin great! Drawn quite a bit of comb, but it's all sort of cross-wise to the frames. If I leave the inner cover and put a new box with frames...
OK! I have bees now! When I got back to the swarm today, some of the bees were still in my hive, clinging to the inner cover. I never did find out if they were already building comb or not. ...
vented hole bucket? I have no idea....
I'm still not sure what to do if they're still on the tree. my present plan is to spray them with a good bit of sugar water (while trying not to drown...
Today I had my first swarm retrieving experience!
Tonight, I still don't have any bees....
When I got the call, I rushed to grab everything I could think of grabbing and drove the half hour to...
I think I read somewhere that chives were good to plant at the base of fruit trees, as they help keep certain bugs from climbing up the trunk. maybe it was garlic... (consulting the wiki) yup,...
wow, thanks for all the help guys! I checked out those sites and am very impressed!
but now that I know that pretty much all the monarda are good for tea (though the fistulosa is apparently best)...
I'm interested in planting some Monarda (bee balm) in a small herb garden with mint and chamomile, mainly because I have read it makes an interesting tea, but also so I can have it outside for the...
maybe it's just me, but I don't think nuke and puke rhyme. puke would rhyme with cuke, (as in cucumber), but nuke to me sounds like new plus a k. that would make cuke sound like kook (as in crazy. ...
*bump*
ok, so how small can the popsicle sticks be and still get away with this? I have some popsicle sticks handy that are the average size and leave maybe 1/8" beyond the groove of my frame... ...
The parts I originally ordered arrived today while I was at work, hooray! All that's left is to pack up the 8-frame equipment and ship it back with the label they sent me.
Brushy Mountain has...
I sent them an email last night and got this reply today.

I apologize for the wrong items being sent to you. I will have the correct items sent to you today, as well as an RS...
calling tomorrow afternoon.
oh. see, showin my newbee colors.
hmm... 8 frame, that makes more sense.
so unfortunately I tossed the paper work that came with them in the mail, but the order summary in my email inbox...
the only things in the pictures are deeps and a migratory top.
outside box dimensions are 19 7/8 x 16 1/4 x 9 5/8
well, the deeps I got from a beekeeper a few hours south of me, and I believe he made them himself.
the inner covers, migratory tops, sbb's all come from brushy mountain. bought them in december...
So... today I started putting my new bee hives together... and I realized I should have done this within the 30 days of arrival.
Check out these pics to get an idea what I mean.

Thanks for all the good advice! Unfortunately, so far the best spot I can think of is about 10 or 15 feet from the neighbor's fence. They also have bird feeders, and Idunno how they'll feel about...
