I finally got around to posting the details on my scale build.
Info is here, but be warned, it's geared for an electronics hobbyist more than a...
Thanks, I sent the folks over there a note.
Anyone else on here participate in this study?

Graphs for the last week. It's been rainy in california, and the bees haven't brought in much.
I'm going to try and update the blog weekly. This will probably be the last time I post an...
It's just a piece of plastic with a brick on it. Water doesn't seem to pool up on top, though it does get stuck in the 'flutes' (it's corrugated plastic, like cardboard). Doesn't really hurt anything...
I can graph based on any manipulation of the data i want.. the lines you see are heavily modified
When i was developing the compensation stuff, i used gnuplot and my brain.
If you're interested...
I was initially expecting to see a dip in weight in the morning as the workers leave, and a bump in the evening when they all call it quits, but i have seen neither. It may be that the outflux of...
I have another method of temperature compensation, and it's actually working pretty well. The line for lbs is not even close to the raw scale readings :)
I'm not sure, but this one isn't 'on'...
I have been tagging the posts with graphs with the 'graphs' tag, and those that talk about the scale with the 'scale' tag.
you can filter posts by tag, eg:

If you go to the blog link, i have done that for the weekly graphs. I'm recording weather since that seems to have the most impact on the hive weight.
e.g. The day after rain it has gained the...

Hi everybody,
I'm fairly new to beekeeping (started last Aug) and am one of those guys who loves data. I would read a lot of posts and books that would talk about doing this or that 'when a flow...
Not sure if it's relevant, but chloramine is definately bad for fish.
Before using chloramine treated water in an aquarium, it is treated using AmQuel or other products designed to neutralize it....
I put the clip that came with it to hold it closed on the bottom (to act as a hinge), then wrapped the bottom bit in aluminum tape
The aluminum tape will probably get brittle, but i love that...
Hi folks,
I recently bought a brushy mountain smoker, which was the higher-end (~$35) model.
I've used it about 6 times, and haven't had any real problems. Today it was really hard to light...
Sounds like they like her just fine. As I understand it, bees fan at the door after swarming to tell any stragglers where home is.
I believe this also happens when you split hives, and is also...
If it's just for personal use (you said no sellng), then why not put foundationless frames in. When it's time to harvest, just cut the comb honey out and put the frames back in for them to...
A knowledgeable bk went through my hive with me and attributed my large qty of burr comb to mixing and matching hive parts. The guy I bought the gear from had cobbled it all together. In particular,...
My experience: strong hive, about 2-5 crawlers most times of day. Did a mite count and collected 37 mites in 24 hrs. No funny wings. Wasps eating the dead most times.
medication threshhold for...
sorry, forgot this was the TBH area. It's a standard 10-frame lang setup. I noticed 3 weeks after i got it (bought as a complete hive) that the full-deep hive body only had 9 frames in it.
doh.

Anyone overwinter their nucs/observation hives indoors?
I was thinking of either keeping them inside or in the garage, with a tube to reach the outside. Does that work? will it improve their...
my current 10 frame hive came with 9 frames in the brood nest (which i am trying to remedy), but what are the problems that this sort of spacing causes in there?
Sorry to hijack the thread :)

I've got a screened bottom board - i'll throw a sticky board of some kind underneath for a day and get a mite count. thanks for the feedback

Here's a couple of pictures, as promised.
It was hot today, so they are bearding a bit. The ones on the porch aren't dead :)
At the time of the pictures i think there were 2 bees crawling...
there are usually a couple yellowjackets/wasps (both types are commonly seen) buzzing around the graveyard and feeding on the dead, but they stay away from the hive entrance.. seems like they are...
I have a single hive and since this is my first go round with beekeeping, i don't have much context for what is normal. I was inspired by a related thread to ask this.
For example, at any given...
