    Re: Acebirds one hive

Acebird is right about the moisture collecting on the inside end walls of the hive bodies. The end frames are always a mess come Spring. I have not been able to solve the ventilation problem. I have...

    Re: Russian Package, Richmond Area

I happened upon this re-queening method by mistake. I re-queened a hive this fall. I took the cork out of the candy end of the cage. After a week I checked the cage. Usually I check sooner. I looked...

    Re: Top insulation?

I think you are right about that. The problem is that two hives are low on stores and a beekeeper is trying to buy time by keeping the hive unseasonably warm in the hopes that the bees will bring the...

    Re: Top insulation?

Well, maybe that is why the top layer of the straw is damp. I was thinking that maybe the rain had come in because the single front vent in each of the quilt boxes was not drilled with an upward...

    Re: Top insulation?

Well, that is what does not make sense. I am feeding one hive on the top bars of the 2nd deep. The inner cover is off. I filled a 4th deep with straw and drilled a 7/8th vent hole by the front hand...

Re: Beekeeping and the Atkins Diet

I think the answer is not eating so much fat. It is good to eat a little honey every day-for your own well being as well as the bees. Good luck on your diet.

    Re: Acebirds one hive

Maybe you can make the hive a little warmer and not worry about ventilation. Take a deep super and staple bee proof hardware cloth on the bottom. Drill a 7/8th vent hole on the front by the handle...

    Re: Neighbor complaint

This is what I would do. Make up a batch of homemade pollen mix (soy flour, dry milk, vitamin C, sea salt). I think this is the complete recipe, but you can check on beesource. Grind up some anise...

It is one rounded teaspoon per gallon of syrup. Sorry, I don't mean to confuse everybody.

    Re: fumagilin B

I read those directions wrong. The directions say 1/2 rounded Tablespoon per 1 gallon of syrup. Kind of crazy directions.

    fumagilin B

I just purchased Fumagilin-B. The directions say 1 rounded Tablespoon per 1 gallon of fall syrup. Is this right? In years past the directions said 2 rounded teaspoons per 1 gallon of fall syrup.

Re: EFB Can they be saved?

Is it the white twisted larvae (like a copperhead snake ready to strike) that make you think that this is EFB? That is what I see in your picture. Is this what you are referring to?

    super-sized smoker

Would you buy the larger 4 by 10? I bought a replacement valve for my old smoker. Unfortunately, I now see I have a tear in the bellows. I don't know if the tear is from old age (smoker is at least...
  16. Re: I am going to need so much advice. Please brace yourselves.

Also, once the smoker is going put a little green grass on top of the fuel to cool the smoke. Test the the temperature of the smoke-not too hot.
  17. Re: I am going to need so much advice. Please brace yourselves.

A propane torch to light the smoker works great. Also you can use the propane torch to clean the inside of the smoker.

Re: Hopguard II and Hive Kills

I used hopguard I last year with pretty good results. This summer, I purchased hopguard II from Mann Lake for some of the smaller hives. I will wait and hear what you have to say...

Re: Any input on caring for Bee Tree seedlings

What about seaweed? Some people use seaweed in their vegetable gardens. I think it is too cold in zone 5 for bee bee trees. My bee bee trees died. Maybe a peat pot would have made the difference. I...

Re: securing a publicly accessible hive

I would post the ten commandments by the hives. I would label supers, bottom boards and hive covers with my name and phone number.
