I'm sorry, I misread your original post and didn't know that it had a float. I was thinking of the hive top feeder with no float.

I staple a screen over the hive top and then caulk on the inside where the screen meets the plastic. It's the only way to keep the bees from drowning unfortunately. Why they don't ship with...

Sometimes they don't touch it 5 feet away. Move it 20 and they might. Odd girls.
If you use a bucket of some sort, sanding the sides will help to keep the bees from drowning too...better traction.
P.S. Where does one purchase lemon grass oil? Thanks!
1 hive on 1/4 acre (hard to find around here!) in Denver. 2 nearby parks help...but the constant rain does not at the moment.
I only have 1 hive so I can rescue my bees from drowning and I really try not to squish any, but if I had a lot of hives there would be no way to be that careful. I could see how that would be...
I got stung on the ankle the other day and thought nothing of it, until my entire foot swelled up the next day and then up to my knee. Not fun. Mine started to go down after about 4-5 days and...
I echo everyone's post..he's helped out tremendously (as have some others) and I always search his website before asking a dumb question.
Thanks! I'll wait until they're filled up around 70%.
I just hived my nuc yesterday and all went well. According to member's advice on here, I filled the rest with drawn comb frames (from my previous dead out 2 years ago, no disease).
I'm feeding...
37 and live in urban Denver. A lot of people my age are definitely interested in it although only a few have taken the plunge. I think it's kind of considered 'hip' to be a beekeeper now. :)
Thanks for everyone's help, I'll give it a shot and report anything interesting!

To answer some questions...they've been wrapped in plastic in my garage for the past 2 years. Pollen looks fine (to my lay eyes) as does the honey in the mediums, but I didn't really inspect the...
Hello All!
I haven't been on here in 2 years since my girls died...I checked for all the signs of potential disease (I lost them in a cold snap in March 08) and finding none and with the help of...
Thanks guys! After watching them some more (and seeing them multiply) I think I've arrived at the same conclusion...that the bees are from somewhere else. I'll just leave the frames with honey out...
So about a week ago I checked on my hives because it was in the mid 50's...no activity and tons of dead bees in the top brood box...and not one flying around. It totally bummed me out. I was going...
Thanks raven! It was a sad day and I'll miss my girls.
So I checked on my girls 2 weeks ago and they looked much thinner from last year (only covering about 2 frames)....but behaving well and bringing in pollen. I fed them and then a few days ago we had...

I have 3 neighbors all within 20 ft. of my hive and I don't think any of them know that I keep bees (fingers crossed...but now we're officially legal in Denver, whoooo!). I'm careful to keep up...
I have deep supers with medium honey supers. From last year's crop of honey, I still have some frames that need to be cleaned of leftover honey by the bees (i've been keeping them in the garage). ...
So I'm an urban beekeeper (1 hive) in Denver and the city council just passed an ordinance to allow 2 hives as long as there are 6 foot barriers around it. I thought they should've probably put some...
Hmmmm...maybe I'll put it in my house then because my garage is very old (read: lots of places bees could get in) and right next to my hive (doh!).
Thanks for the input...if I have a swarm of bees...
thanks!
