    Re: Bee health-checker device

Thanks, Rader! It's a fascinating device. You have to love German engineering.

Interestingly, it doesn't seem to align with the idea of the entire colony as a single organism. The gizmo that could...

Poll: Re: City bees vs. Country bees

My hives are in the city now but I'm not sure how valuable that information is. We're in the high desert and water is kind of scarce here. People have been moving to xeriscape which seem to reduce...

    Re: arc topbars

A friend posted this link today and asked me what I thought of these hives. In searching the Beesource archives I came across this thread from 2005, so I'll revive it as I don't see others.

    I...

I second Rhode Island. I have no idea what the colors might be like, but the food and the coastline are great.

We used to attach a really long length of aluminum foil to a couple of 3' dia. black helium filled balloons in Albuquerque and release it at night. I suspect that drones and LEDs have replaced...

    Re: Black bees

My father spoke about "German black bees" in West Virginia where he was born and raised. This would have been from around 1913 through the late 1920's. He hated them, and wasn't supportive of me...

    Black bees

I put out some old comb for the bees to clean up. While I was watching them I noticed a lot of pure black bees mixed in. Not sure where they're from. Some of them still have traces of yellow bands on...

If there's a way to put a screen of some sort over them so that they're not attracted to lights where the guests are it would be helpful. My bees beard at night and invariably they're around the...
