  2. Help me get through my first Indiana winter.

First year beek. I have one hive that I started from a three pound package back in the late spring. So far everything went smooth this summer. They filled two 8 frame deep boxes pretty quickly. ...

    Re: Advice for Package Bees

If you do find a source also consider the shipment time of year. The supplier I got mine from two shipments last year, I was in on the second shipment so it was a little later. You are doing yourself...
  4. Re: What to do with 2nd super that isn't being filled.

This is my first year but I feel the brood chambers are on good shape. Some of the frames are completely full of honey and some are still being used for brood. I only pulled one frame yesterday but...
  5. Re: What to do with 2nd super that isn't being filled.

Thanks for the info. I might leave it on for a while longer and see what happens. I just didn't know if there was any downside to having a super on there that they weren't really using. There are...
  6. What to do with 2nd super that isn't being filled.

My first year hive has two 8 frame deeps and two medium supers on it right now. The lower super started to fill a couple weeks ago so I added another. I checked it today and there is a little drawn...

    Re: Smell of a hive

I was getting ready to start a thread asking why my hive smelled like popcorn today. Looks like its the goldenrod. I figured I wasn't the first to notice this!

    Re: Mowing?

In 2012 I was mowing for a friend of mine who had 5 hives. He had a mulch bed that they set on but the two end hives were right on the edge of the mulch. I mowed right up against them all summer...

    Re: Full suit or jacket.

I bought a smock pullover veil/jacket last year from Ebay. It was only around $35 and has worked fine. This has been a cooler the average summer. I am thinking about getting a ventilated jacket for...

    Do your children get involved?

This is my first year and both children (5 and 9) have been interested in the bee hive. I ordered a suit that would work for both of them and took my 5 year old son along last week. I didn't know...

    Re: new beekeepers

I just bought a full suit that fits my 5 and 9 year olds. My son (5) went over earlier this week for a full inspection and he loved it, stood right in there and was never frightened one time. My...

    Re: Winter stores question

I apologize in advance but I didn't understand what you said about "feeding until its all full isn't the best." I am not currently feeding so that had me confused, unless you are talking about...

    Re: Winter stores question

Thanks for the info. I will give it a few more days then add another medium and see what happens. I am assuming worst case scenario is they do not draw or fill it, either way they have two deeps...

    Winter stores question

First year beek/first hive this year. I started with a 3 pound package. I want to ensure that my bees have plenty of stores for the winter. I went over today and checked things out. I have 2 8 frame...

    Re: Serious dragonfly problems

Most research I have read (1st year beek, many years with purple martins) show that martins feed at higher altitudes then what the bees are typically at. I am sure there are times that bees fly...

Re: When to completely remove the reducer?

Right now it is my only entrance and I hadn't planned on another. I have the two deeps and a medium which they are filling. My plan was to not harvest any honey this year just to help them through...

Re: When to completely remove the reducer?

Thanks for the info. So far the entrance is busy but by know means is there a "traffic jam" nor does it appear as they are clogged up, I will leave it as is.

When to completely remove the reducer?

Started with a three pound package this spring. I had a one inch opening beside my entrance feeder. I removed the entrance feeder and left the opening which is now about 4 inches. I went over today...
  20. Re: Hey Newbees, who started this year, got a hive you want to brag on?

Being new I don't know how long it takes to draw comb, but my queen was laying eggs within a couple days of being released. I am guessing had I put the package in a hive with no foundation or comb...
  21. Re: Hey Newbees, who started this year, got a hive you want to brag on?

Not wanting to "brag" on my hive because I hate to jinks myself. I started this year and was only able to get my hands on 1 package of bees and it was a little late to start. I was given drawn comb...
  22. Re: Is it too late to make a split this year (SW Ohio)?

I am a newbie as well and I started with a 3 pound package this spring. I wouldn't think about splitting my first hive this time of year (or any time during the first year). Just me but I want to...
  23. Re: When to remove reducer and when to add honey super?

Is it common place to use an upper entrance as well or do most just use the bottom entrance. Right now I just have the 4 inch bottom entrance and two deeps. Both deeps currently have brood in them.
  24. Re: When to remove reducer and when to add honey super?

Pardon the stupid newbie questions....I know people use the honey supers to harvest honey but will the bees use them over the winter to feed on? I was not planning on harvesting any honey I just...
