  1. Re: Photos of my partial sheet of foundation in deep frames -experiment

Remember the rules of getting smaller worker sized cell's drawn in foundationless areas. Placement of the frame and age of the queen.

First and second pics were in a single deep with a newly...
  2. Re: Photos of my partial sheet of foundation in deep frames -experiment

Yeah, this is the shape you would like to get. Unfortunatly, cutting the foundation this way-semi circular is not cost effective and wouldn't be stable in the frame.

Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

I am open feeding about 25# a day, when temps are in the 60's, warm enough for really active flying. I still have a lot of overwinterng colonies in one location.
I could probably feed twice that...

  6. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

Well, this is a highly unusual season for our area.
I've been feeding dry Beepro on and off since late December, out of necessity rather than choice. I've never seen this behavior before and am just...
  7. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

    Sorry about my absence.

Temps 20 degrees warmer than normal. We have been warm all winter. (Pacific Northwest)
Bees are rearing brood a month early and need protein already, even the...

    Re: A problem..

Hi Puppy, that odd behavior is being seen all over the Pacific Northwest due to our mild winter temps this year. The bees are active and flying with no feed to be found. While they are not starving,...

  11. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

I don't get a day off from work unfortunatly. My posts will be randomly added since is is forecast to be nice warm weather today. If it was raining, I would be more inclined to be inside.

But here is where I'll be going with it.
Partly because of my limited knowledge of chemistry and my interest in nutrition, ...

As soon as there is some natural pollen available, they should be gone. Cedars shouldn't be too far out.

Just plug in your zip code for a local report.

Not to keep this thread going or keep Brian from having the last word...But:

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the alternative of trapping Swarms yet.

  15. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

SO in my mind, this immediately leads me to consider bees that are attracted to swimming pools may be looking for not only salt but calcium as well.

I started adding electrolytes to both my syrup...

Well, being no chemist, I did checked before mixing two chemicals together to make sure I wouldn't kill myself with fumes.

This thread gets me thinking about how I can perhaps adjust my protein patty recipe to include some 'fermented' benefits.
Here's a quick link for getting started on fermented foods.

  21. Re: Probiotics in prepared patties...WORD from the sacred Mountain

God, I wish I'd taken a photo of the bees all over that slimy elk hide in my water trough, soaking in salt and clorox water. Talk about a bacteria source.
Now if I could bottle it and sell it.

Exactly. I see patterns I would have entirely missed with just a few hives. That really helped when I needed to determine just what the issue was and rectify it.

I also have enough spares to see...
