    Re: Swarm catching

Make a deep bottom and use your medium boxes and frames. Half inch plywood . Sides are 1x3s . 1" hole in front. I use them upside down for tops in the winter. Makes room for sugar bricks. It'll end...

Re: Feeding feral bees for a future trapout

I had decided to wait until it was warmer and use syrup. It got colder instead so I never fed. I think they died out. Not for sure though. If theyre alive, I'll feed syrup then do a trap out. If they...

Would a top entrance make it not matter if you put them over or under?

Shane, I had one whole box that didn't attach the combs to the bottom bar at all. Have you had that problem?

Re: Book recommendation for making hives

If I didn't have any hives yet, I think I'd build a long Langstroth for a first hive. Deeps frames. Probably use 2x10 sides. They're cheaper than 1xs here and thicker couldn't hurt.

Re: Book recommendation for making hives

Is your goal to save money or do you just like do things yourself? Wood and power tools are expensive. If you just want a hive or two, it might be cheaper to buy the boxes and frames. Making tops and...

    Re: Minnesota Hygienic Queens

That's good to know. Think our weather is colder than yours. If I buy any they'll be local and not pure.

Re: Won't be getting hives for awhile

If you have time , you could substitute time for money. Maybe build a top bar and try to catch a swarm. You did the right thing though.

    Re: Minnesota Hygienic Queens

My first hive was MNH. I didn't like them for MO, but I'm sure you can't tell much from just one hive. Built up a huge population and maybe 50 lbs of honey the first spring. When our usual summer...

Sticky: Re: Post Your Bloom Dates - 2015

I guess I won't weed my greenhouse for a few weeks. Give my bees an early treat. It's just strawberries with some chickweed. It doesn't seem to hurt the berries much if at all. My chickens love it...

    Re: Double screen for splitting

Guess I could use two stacked mediums on each side.I'll most likely just make one split with a 10 frame medium.

The small weed is probably chickweed. I didn't know bees like it though.

Crofter, are the extra supers in between usually needed? I was thinking the split would stay warmer without them?

    Re: Double screen for splitting

I like that design better, MTN. Mine doesn't have the divider for two nucs. Think I can add one. Don't know if I'll try to mAke two or not. I'm using all medium ten frame. Is a medium 5 frame enough...

    Double screen for splitting

I want to split one of my hives as early as possible. If I put the split on top of the hive on a double screen, will they be seperated from the queen enough to start queens cells? Is this the best...
