Re: Starting new over Wintering nucs

LOL that was funny Tenbears, I had missed it entirely....
  2. Re: need advice on stored honey frames for last year.

The key to open feeding is to do it away from your hives. My feeder is about 100 yards away from my hives. If you put frames out they will destroy the comb. With open feeding you do feed all the...

    Re: Queenless and timing question.

If you've got a frame with eggs, that is the route I would take first. check back in 10 days and make sure you've got capped cells. I don't think shipping is that great a risk, I just got one two...

If you ran it thru any kind of filter, you should be good to go.

    Re: Hive beetles

Or immediately freeze it, and thaw it out to extract it when you are ready. Freezing it will kill anything in the honey, comb or frames.

    Re: how i graft

Again only two takes, but I learned a lot and I've been waiting for a new queen that I hope was accepted. took the cage out 3 days ago, I'll probably put a frame in there for her to lay on tomorrow...

    Re: screened or solid base

+1 on the oil trays. I bought 3 more today. I intend to have them on all my hives in the next month.

    Re: Hive beetles

How do you use them, I tried them and never once caught a beetle, finally threw them away. I'd find them in the entrance, the bees would drag them down from the top thru the frames and out the...
  11. Re: Freeman Beetle traps are AWESOME. over 50 beetles in 4 hours.

Thanks for the tip Mike. I haven't dusted since I started using OAV on the mites. Hadn't thought about the fact that it might help get some SHB in the tray. I'll give it a try.
  12. Freeman Beetle traps are AWESOME. over 50 beetles in 4 hours.

I've been using them for several years. But never put one on a hive that was already in trouble. They are expensive, so I haven't bought one for every hive as I've expanded. We've got more SHB than...
  13. Re: Beetles, Moths, Roaches, Ants, and Robbing but won't give up.

Hang in there, it can be tough going some times. I would make one suggestion. Add a few more hives if you can afford to. More hives gives you more resources to combat problems.
    If you lose one...
  14. Re: Help with Expenisve Breeder queen introduction problem

I bought mine to raise my own queens with, not to sell, or claim anything. I bought her because she was a breeder queen, from a production hive, that exhibited the traits I was looking for. Mine...
  15. Re: Help with Expenisve Breeder queen introduction problem

Now you know why I was so concerned... :)
  16. Re: Treating with OAV with screened bottom boards

I have found it to be very effective even without closing screened bottom boards. Heat rises, so it works it's way up thru the hive before it can cool.
  17. Re: Help with Expenisve Breeder queen introduction problem

Yep, it's going to be a long week waiting to open it up and check, I'll probably wait 10 days, that will take me into the next weekend. I'll be a good boy unless I suspect robing which is bad this...
  18. Re: Help with Expenisve Breeder queen introduction problem

I came home early, they had eaten about half the candy and where still trying to sting her, so I took 4 frames from another queenless hive and made a nuc. Waited an hour and put the cage in with...
  19. Re: Should I remove the entrance reducers in this hotter weather?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I've lost two nucs to robbing in the last two weeks. Reducers are back on anything that is not VERY strong.
  20. Help with Expensive Breeder queen introduction problem

I've got a very expensive breeder queen I'm trying to introduce into a single medium queen timing box I built on Saturday. It's 8 frames of brood, lots of bees, 2 frames of stores. When I built the...

Re: My last attempt at grafting was abysmal!

You're doing better than I am, 3 tries, zero, 2 and zero takes... That said, I think I'm getting the kinks worked out. Will try again with a new queen in about 10 days.

    Re: Poor Valley Bee Farm

I've ordered 5 times from them this year, very pleased with the service. Very quick shipping.
  24. Re: Anybody using a queen cell timing box as described by the fat bee man?

Great info Mr. Palmer, Thank you very much.
  25. Re: Anybody using a queen cell timing box as described by the fat bee man?

Well little john, I thought I had done a good job building my box... Your's puts mine to shame, my only improvement was that mine has a freeman beetle trap for a bottom board. Our SHB are...
