    we use wood pellets. ya have to put something on top to keep pellets from falling out. part of an old t shirt works well. cheap and they work good. we have tried burlap, pine needles. wood shavings....

    as long as there is storage room above bees will move honey up for brood if needed. better have too much winter honey rather than be 1 lb short. bees know more about wintering than their masters.

    as said the farther south ya go they are a bigger problem. a strong hive keeps them under control but when a hive gets weak is when they take over.

    I agree the supplier should have worked with the buyer but how do you explain being ok upon pickup and dead 1 1/2 hr later.? bees don't starve that quick.

    we have fed 100's of hives with 1 gal zip lock bags with on problem. we always used the freezer bags as they are heaver. hive has to be level.

    I would cut the hole and use a good heated sump. last I knew dadant was cheaper than Kelly. you can always fill back in the concrete if plans change. I would use your bulk tank with a larger outlet....

    if the hive is normal your due to add the second box. your flow should be going good so you may not need to feed anymore. empty queen cells are normal. good luck beekeeping

    moving drawn frames to the outside and bringing undrawn toward the center will help but don't separate any brood. it must stay together.
