Re: Bearding all day and night

OK I'm at the "calming" mode now. It's interesting that they also don't go inside even though we've had some deluges overnight.

Re: Bearding all day and night

Well, I just checked the hives and there are about 1 quarter of the bees I've been seeing. I wish I had photographed them yesterday.

Re: Bearding all day and night

I guess that was my original question. They have one empty super on the top of each of the 5 hives now. I know it won't hurt them but maybe I could add another super to the ones that have a huge...

Re: Bearding all day and night

    jjohnsind,

I may just tilt the top lid to get a little more air movement in the hives.

What do your slatted bottom boards look like? I have too many critters of all sizes that could make that...

Re: Bearding all day and night

    Caribhopper,

Thanks for your response. I was just wondering if there is anything to help out. But I guess it's good to have so many bees that they can hang out.

How long have you had bees?...

    Bearding all day and night

I'm wondering if I should add another super to the hives that are bearding. Lots of bees outside and up the front. It is very hot and humid and almost no nectar coming in. They do have 4 and 5 supers...
  7. Re: Barricading with propolis- what's going on??

ricky arthur- I agree about the entrance. It has already been narrowed down to their spec's.

Dominic- Is it possible that I have a caucasian swarm, since they are from a pretty old hive-house?...
  8. Re: Barricading with propolis- what's going on??

I always appreciate the new lessons I learn on Beesource. Will check the mite load and do something about the entrance. This swarm has been living in an old house for probably 40- 50 years and has...
  9. Barricading with propolis- what's going on??

One of my hives is building a wall of China across the front entrance. There are slits and holes in this propolis wall. They were a late swarm last year that I gave a queen cell to from another hive....

Re: Small queen cell- Does it matter?

    jcolon,

It's always good to hear a success story. I'll know in a few weeks how she's doing when I check it again.

    Windfall,

That's encouraging. I'll watch her. She should be emerging in a few days.

Re: Small queen cell- Does it matter?

I wasn't sure what to do at this point but Michael Bush's comment gives me hope that she'll be fine. They may supersede her but I'll let them figure it out.

    Thanks for the input.

Small queen cell- Does it matter?

One of my hives is requeening and the cell is rather small. Will this mean she will be an inferior queen? Is her egg laying life shorter than a larger queen?

Re: Do you put weight on your top covers?

Mine are two bricks per hive-- like most responses. Only have added a half concrete block when the wind was fierce.

    Re: Reuse of plastic foundation

    AR Beekeeper,
Thank you for the information- I feel a lot more confident in using it. Right now it's the best I have for the new colonies.

    Re: Reuse of plastic foundation

I washed it so there would be room for the queen to lay her eggs. OR would they just remove the pollen to make room? And the crystallized honey?

Glad to know about their acceptance of it.

    Reuse of plastic foundation

I have some plastic foundation that is drawn out. I got it by way of buying nuc's. NOT anything I would have bought.

I need to have some drawn frames for my own nuc's and have tried to wash out...

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

I was wondering about the vinegar as opposed to just water for the sugar bricks. Is there an additional plus to using vinegar?

    Thanks for all your replies.

    Walter,

    Thanks for the "extra" ideas.

    Walter,

I'm glad I asked. That was what I was worried would happen. I don't know how the Ziplock baggies works in the hive.

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

I didn't think about them having difficulty taking the syrup below 50 degrees. I may just try my first sugar block- a small one. How thick should these be?

    Thanks!

Putting sugar water feeder in hive

Re: What are yellow flecks on dead bees?

Just checked the hive and that's what it is. (wax cappings and sugar). Unfortunately, this hive died. There were plenty of bees but I think I didn't give them enough ventilation.

    It's like a death...

Re: What are yellow flecks on dead bees?

Yes, they have sugar on top and yes, the photos aren't great.

So I guess it's wax cappings. I thought it might be but wanted to make sure.

    Thanks for the responses.

I'm hoping it's wax. Went out to take some pictures and will try to post them.
