Re: Ideas To Prevent Top Bar Cross Comb

That might be heard to keep flat in the hive, most light wire comes in a roll. It would also be a pain when you want to cut out queen cells, or trim comb. That said, I would give it a try on a half...
  2. Re: 2017 prep work: how many TBH how many TBH nuc hives?

You will find that JW had TBHs and when things got difficult he jumped the fence for the greener side! LOL He now joins a small group of vocal people on BeeSource who are trying to save the world...

    Re: Need help settling arguement

Why not just leave it out for the bees to clean up, they will probably do a better job anyway!
  4. Re: 2017 prep work: how many TBH how many TBH nuc hives?

Most of my TBHs where built following Bush's plans, with a 1x8 on the bottom instead of the 1x6. This last winter I built two TBHs and nucs with a 1x10 bottom board and 23 in bars. I like how it is...
  5. Re: 2017 prep work: how many TBH how many TBH nuc hives?

I like to have one or two nucs for each hive, so 6 and 6 or 4 and 8 would make your 12. Nucs are easier to work, and will give you many more opportunities to learn, make splits, raise queens.
    I do...

    Re: Processing Wax

I use the old T-shirt pieces as fire starters, they work great!
  7. Re: Honey production terrible in Top bar hives?

This is my fourth year running all TBH's, though I am babysitting a couple of Langs too. The TBH's in the same spot with the langs are doing about the same for honey production, but I personally feel...

Re: Time to gather smoker fuel

I was told to wait and gather the bobs later in the year so that they are dry. Do you collect them and then spread them out somewhere to dry, before storing them?

    Re: More queen questions

Put in a frame with eggs and larvae, that will ensure that you have the right age range for them to draw queen cells, if they need too!

    Re: Harvesting honey by hand?

    Deep, Medium, or Shallow frames?
You can just cut it off the frame, leaving the wires, and then crush and strain the comb to get the honey. Or, are you talking about using a hand cranked extractor?

    Re: Transporting a Hot Smoker

I just stick a cork in the end and set it on the passenger floor mat.

You can get a much better price by selling it by the ounce, in one ounce bars.

    First Sting to the Face

This evening I was helping a friend go through her hives. We went all the way to the bottom, put it all back together, added suppers and a queen excluder. I stepped away the from the hive and when I...

    Re: Cross comb madness

Nothing wrong with the foundation as a comb guide. The pain in the but comes in when you have to replace it. You have to clean out the groove to put the new piece of foundation in. When you harvest...

Thanks Ethan, but not really. I learned that and many other things from the people before me. I like to pay attention! LOL

    Re: Cross comb madness

Save what comb you can, but a real comb guide is key! I use a triangle wedge that runs almost the whole inside width of the hives. Though there are just some bees that will not draw out straight comb...

  19. Re: Pricing to Cooperate not Compete with Fellow Beekeepers

You should look into that Canadian Maple Syrup thing a little closer. No one seems to like it much, except the people who run the program!

Re: Books on Top Bar methods

Bush's book is a good one, not sure what people think is wrong with the organization? I do like the book much better than the website.

Re: Books on Top Bar methods

Nope, not just you! I borrowed that one from the library, read it once, that was enough. There are also many good, non TBH, bee books out there!
  22. Re: Holes drilled in the side or leave a space on the end like Michael Bush recommend

I have no experience with entrance holes in the side middle. I have a few hives with entrance holes in the side end and they do not put brood in those frames, just pollen and nectar. The vast...
