    One of the ways to narrow down the species is the time of year they're seen different times for different species. None the less they are still difficult to identify the exact species.

    I run robbing screens on all my mating nucs haven't had any issues with queens on mating flights not being able to find their way back in either.

    1/2 inch diameter hole for an entrance? That explains part of your problem a traffic jam also in hot weather. If this is a full size hive they need more than a half inch entrance even a well...
