Re: Keeping the hobby under control

I kind of wish some of mine would croak over winter. But it hasn't happened yet. If they all survive again this winter I'm going to need a divorce attorney and an apartment.

    Hahahaha, and thank you.

Re: lineages... In my brain. I'm not big enough to worry about it too much. I know the queen's mom and in some cases grandmother. Rudimentary picking "breeders" based...

    Re: Just caught swarm

I wouldn't bother moving them 20 miles. Just see if they stay. You could rig up some Brood at least.

Re: Ohio Bee Box Company - Free Shipping!

Their unassembled prices have jumped $3 or $4 each. But their commercial grades are now priced the same as Mann Lake budget deeps for quantities in the 10s. So 20 from ML $279 or 20 from OBB $280. ...

    Sticky: Re: Flow Hive/Frames

They make good observation sized hives and swarm machines.
I do regret making the choice initially.

    Re: Just caught swarm

    No, I'm talking miles.

The frame of brood should do the trick though. I would, however, move them immediately to where ever you want them to be permanently.

Re: First Graft of the Year

Well these tiny 2-frame nucs have blow up into an average of 20 frames without feed or bee input. So from mid-May when I moved them from 2-frame to 5 they've grown that much. Did a couple more...
  9. Re: Success Rate of Queen Cells in Early August

It will work or it won't. You can always buy mated queens from the source in a couple weeks if it doesn't work out, right?

More than anything it has to do with the amount of drones around at...

    Re: Electric Uncapping Knives

With the amount of times I stab myself with the capping scratcher or burn myself with the hot knife, I'm not sure I have enough digits to run one of these.

I think you'd like a hot knife better...

    Re: Just caught swarm

I'm a firm believer that moving a swarm disrupts their scouting (obviously) and if not moved from the area they might find another place to go (or go to the place that they had been scouting before...

  17. Re: Video of Workers Pushing out Drones??? Need feedback.

    There's your answer.
Unless you're trying to get queens mated or something just let it ride. Make sure they have plenty of honey to get them through these next few weeks. Feed if absolutely...

    Re: Iowa Bee Keepers...

My a humbly suggest you build twice as many as you think you need? :)

I've gone through about 30 supers and like 40 deeps this spring. Started with 8 colonies... 3 of those were nucs.

rspading, if you keep the mites in check you'll be floored how fast your colonies (and your colony count) grow. Best of luck. :P What you think of as huge this year you'll view as a dink next...
  22. Re: Video of Workers Pushing out Drones??? Need feedback.

    I see wash boarding.

Spring/summer flow doesn't last forever. Maybe they're kicking them out.
  23. Re: Graft on Pollen frames--2 year results are in

Yeah, but she puts a pollen frame in the incubator just in case, right?
  24. Re: Graft on Pollen frames--2 year results are in

Where are the side-by-side comparison pics of 'cell bar queens' and pollen frame queens? They look no bigger than any other queens you've posted.

Here's one of my cell-bar virgins, tell me how...
  25. Re: 6 cups grafted. Killed over 20 in the process.

Put a frame of eggs/young larva in next to the cells so that there's something to show for the efforts here in a week and a half. Just in case. ;)
