Re: Deer? Vandals? We shall see.

I also ratchet strap the hives to the hive stand or pallets. That might help also. If they are removed or cut you will know the culprit.

Re: Deer? Vandals? We shall see.

Bears don't just knock hives over. They knock them over and tear them apart. Deer you would likely see gouge marks from the antler tines. More likely vandals, especially if it's only one at a time....

    Re: hardware cloth

Just like David W, I ordered # 8 hardware cloth from Amazon. I could not find it locally and nobody would even order it locally.

Re: Out yard problems u can face

Another thing to keep in mind are the curve balls. Always be ready to move your hives. This past week I got an email from a landowner that had an allergic reaction to a bee sting when he went to lift...

    Re: Pocket Microscope

I'm curious to. A lot of our customers buy the honey because it's got pollen in it and that is not filtered. Just curious if we're missing something?

    Re: shakeing bees

Shaking bees is an option. Another option is any hive that is not productive, break it down into nucs. The thought being once a dink- always a dink. That gives you an option of a new start. For nucs...

    Re: Beemax Nucs

I slide my double nucs into groups of 4 (8 colonies), wrap them in heavy roofing felt. The lids are migratory, so I cut rigid foam that slides in the space on the top of the lid. For the top I have...

    Re: Beemax Nucs

Pretty nice- the price is the killer. I can have a lot of 5 frame wooden nucs for the price of one of Modern Beekeeping nucs.

Re: HOW BEST TO HIVE THREE NEW NUCS

Old timer- I was not speaking about swarm management or swarm prevention. I've been following Michael Palmer's management style which is leave the strong hives strong to produce a honey crop. Yes you...

Re: Looking for advice for starting beeK

First year is easy- Really??? How many new beekeepers know how to transport brood or where to get it. I don't worry about the warm cooler- I just use the bees.

    Re: shakeing bees

Do you know the cause of why the nuc is struggling? I usually try to figure out the cause before throwing brood or bees at the problem.

Re: HOW BEST TO HIVE THREE NEW NUCS

You are correct- when you get your hives established I would not take from a stronger one and give to the weaker hive after your 1st year. That's what you will have brood factories for. Before...

Re: HOW BEST TO HIVE THREE NEW NUCS

I would not worry about the brood factory and Nucs. If you put that nuc into a 5 frame nuc box it will very likely swarm. I would just hive them all. If one is weaker than another pull a frame of...

Re: Looking for advice for starting beeK

You are likely going to be over tasked with these being your first hives. Just hive the package bees and the Nuc and don't complicate your life. Brood should be transported with bees to keep them...

Re: Rain barrel waters for bees

Nosema is not a problem with water. It is more likely when bees are confined in the hive.

Re: Bears and Bears and Bears Oh My!

I not sure shooting will deter bears from destroying hives. Hunting will reduce bears in a given area and can be used to remove a problem bear. Just do it legally. Most states have laws that allow...

Buy a good strong 12 volt fence charger like the Parmak 12. You can use solar or household current depending on the model you purchase. Research your fence design well. If fails you will have a lot...

    Re: painting hives

I use a high quality exterior latex paint and primer on the outside with 2 coats.

No need to do anything with the inside areas. The bees will coat it very nicely at no additional charge.
