    Re: Dead Queen

Thanks. Any idea why they have not tried to supercede the bad queen instead of letting her perform so poorly?

Following up on this situation. The queen is still alive, but I am not seeing any open or capped brood. The only capped cells I see are drone and there are quite a few drones in the hive. The bees...

    Re: Converting Nuc to Foundationless

    Joseph,

The feeding plan is to feed them until they quit taking it. I was being a bit vague there :)

Thanks for the advice on frames. I installed them today, so I am going to wait a week...

    Re: Dead Queen

Turns out she was not dead after all. I went to install a new queen package and she was alive and well, still in the cage. There was no sign of life when I put the cage back into the hive on...

    Dead Queen

I installed a 3# package of Buckfast bees on Friday and did not direct release. Checked to see if she was out and about this morning with the intention of releasing her if the candy was still...

    Kathy:

Where are you getting your nucs? I know there is a apiary up the road from me off of I-395 and I have a nuc on order from Behavin' in RI. Just wondering if there was somewhere else in SE...
  10. Re: Shipping Package Bees through the Post Office

The bees shipped Priority Mail on 4/30/2010 from Navasota, TX and arrived in North Stonington, CT on 5/4/2010. So, four days in transit.
  11. Re: Shipping Package Bees through the Post Office

I got a 3 lb package of Buckfasts on Tuesday of this week from R Weaver.

Texas to Connecticut via USPS ground service. Minimal dead bees. :applause:

    Another package due tomorrow.

    Re: linseed oil?

I have used 20:1 with success. As far as spontaneous combustion, I have not seen that mixture heat up on the rags and paper towels after cleaning up.

    Preventing absconding

Packages won't be here for another couple of weeks so I have too much time to think about my new hives and not much to do with my new hives. A recent thread about an absconding package got me to...

  15. Re: Starting my first TBH on a rooftop in Brooklyn...any advice?

Build it 48" and use a follower board to expand the space as necessary. If they fill up a 48", then build another and split the first. Repeat as necessary. Phil Chandler's website ...

    Re: Question for MA beeks

American Bee Journal April 2010 p354 indicates that bees won't work Forsythia because the plant produces lactose which the bees can't digest. Anyone have bees that prove this wrong?

  20. Re: To Build A Kenya Top Bar Hive - Part 5 - Finish Hive And Attach Legs

    Excellent as always. :applause:

I can hardly wait for part six. I have all the materials for everything and will probably get started on the body of my first KTBH this weekend.

    Re: Top Bar Ventilation

I doubt those of us across the pond would have many badger incursions, but this could definitely be an issue with skunks and possibly opossums. Armadillos in Texas?

    Re: Beginner mite control question

You could take the approach that the hive is the entity and not the individual bees themselves. Think of it as giving the hive a haircut. :D

I know Phil Chandler is promoting unscreened hives. I wonder what he has experienced with installing bees in a bottomless setup.
