Re: Using excel to estimate yearly income

Oh I understand being realistic. My projections show being in the hole $10,000+ some years and I figure it may be that way many years. That is why I don't skip my day job and I only figure 200 hives...

Re: Using excel to estimate yearly income

Thank you all for the thoughts. Of course all of this is very loose estimates and there are other things to account for. I plan on slowly building over the next 5 years and when things get bigger I...

Re: Using excel to estimate yearly income

I based my mortality rates on local nuc breeders here in Oklahoma and talking with them about the years past. So I think my averages are consistent to practices around here.

Re: Using excel to estimate yearly income

I am just putting in worst case scenarios into the mix. I mean if all I have to do is catch a swarm of do a split using exists ting equipment it is near free for the Replacement but if there is a...

Using excel to estimate yearly income

    Hello everyone.

I am just a minor beek with ambitions of a small apiary to help supplement my income and eventually take over as my main job. I currently have a 5 year plan to expand up to about...
  7. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Cool hopefully in a couple weeks I have a strong queen to build this hive up.
  8. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Ok I wanted to give an update if anyone wanted to see how this is ending up. After cleaning out the hive the next day I got some guard star and used as directed around the hive. I checked it today...

Re: Two random swarms within 30 minutes

Checked the swarms today. Lots of bees festooning and climbing on the outside of the box the first swarm went into. I took some cardboard and scooped them up and put them in a different box. They...

Two random swarms within 30 minutes

I just had to share this. I was in the yard with my wife relaxing when I noticed a high buzzing sound coming from the back of the yard. Walked back and noticed a cloud of bees! I saw where the queen...
  12. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Well the queen cells I found are toast. They ripped when I move the frame with them on it. I have no queen excluder because I never needed one before. I'll post updates on progress soon.
  13. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Now that I thought about it. Those maggots have to be small hive beetle larva. Makes sense, there was a lot of those beetles in the original hive. I am pretty sure from shear numbers of those I may...

Ok so checked out the bees today. I am glad and sad that I did so. From the pics you can see the level of gross that was in the hive. It was crawling with maggots. Not sure if...
  15. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Interesting. I always figured that the larva will be of an age that will produce a good laying queen. May not be the absolute best like one strait hatched from an egg and immediately fed Royal jelly...
  16. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Ok I see your point. I think I will try and look into it late tomorrow afternoon which will be the 5 day mark. See what I want to do from there.
  17. Re: Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

Well this is where I am still learning. My thoughts: There is a lot of debre in the comb like wood shavings from the chain saw and such. I wanted to give the bees plenty of undesturbed time to clean...
  18. Tree trimming company called and I ran to their aid.

I just wanted to share an experience I had last Wednesday. I am on the local swarm list and a tree trimming company called me saying they were taking down this 50+ year old tree and found it was...
  19. Re: The making of a frame, with side discussion of frame rests, bee space, and Langst

Repurposed wood is about all I have used recently. Here are some frames whipped up from old fencing that was replaced.

Trying out new long Lang hive

Here I have my new long Lang hive that I am going to try this year. I have started a cut out and a couple packages in some 10 frame deep langs and will eventually get them into 3 of these. They hold...

  23. Re: Hive gone, some comb, leave it or get rid of it?

This year I had a package abscond and a cutout hive abscond in two different langstroth hives. In both cases they had screened bottoms. I was lucky and was able to find the bees both times. Added...

Re: Interested in cluster box/smoke up design

I guess I am still new but I am into my 4th season with one swarm, two cutouts, two packages, and two nucs under my belt these past few years. And I still am not getting what you are trying to...
