  1. Re: introducing a carniolan queen to an italian queen-less colony

Can you explain what a flow or is? I'm such a newb.

I don't have or use a smoker. I use sugar water in a spray bottle.

How would a push cage work if I have no existing worker brood?
  2. introducing a carniolan queen to an italian queen-less colony

I have plans all set up to do this shake out technique to save my colony (laying worker). Found a local source for a carniolan. A beekeeper friend says that introducing a carniolan queen to an...

So, since I obviously have a laying worker and have come up dry in getting worker brood from other beeks, here's the shake-out procedure I'm following:

I am going to dismantle my hive, load...

    Re: pics - 3 eggs in a cell ?

Just going off beesource replies coupled with the fact that they've gotten grumpier by the day, I'd say there is no queen. Certainly no capped workers that I've seen and more drones than (in my...

Sorry for the lag in reply. I missed this. She came with my package so she would have been unmated at that point. That was in May.
  7. laying worker / hive destined for failure...one possible fix.

So I seem to have a laying worker in my TBH. I've heard the advice to give them a frame of brood but I'm having a very difficult time locating any locally (and kind of concerned about accepting...

    pics - 3 eggs in a cell ?

I'm really new to identifying these things.
    Here's what I see:

~Several eggs in a single cell...certainly capped drone cells but also a few capped worker cells

    Am I correct in my...

Thanks Michael. I didn't realize that drone brood swelled SO far above the surface. Also, as I was watching them this afternoon, I saw a great number of drones entering and leaving the hive. I...
  13. not sure if I'm looking at a supercedure cell....*added pics*

Three weeks ago I installed bees into their brand new hive. I took a look at the comb today for the first time, sans bees, using a beaver brush to get a good look.

I saw some perfect white comb....

They do seem to be clustered around a top bar, from what I can see. I just can't see the comb at all.

So, to recap, I accidentally freed my queen last night. Newly built top bar hive. Brand new beekeeper. How will I know and how soon can I tell if she stayed in the hive?

I know they don't eat the cork. There was a tiny piece of the cork that was too hard to remove. It seemed like they hadn't done anything since there was about 1/16th of cork still showing.

I had hoped they would have made *some* progress. They hadn't. There were pieces of cork that were blocking the way to the candy and they weren't coming loose. I'm a worried new mom. ;-)
